Genesis 9 delayed until at least 2020. Will you be buying it?

I have more than enough human figures of varying  age  and ethnicity. Currently I am only shopping for scenes, props, shaders and lighting products.  With the next iteration of the genesis figures likely to hit in July of this year, theres really no point in further investing in figures until I see what Genesis 9 brings to the table. If we dont get the backwards compatibility that I so love about Genesis 8 I wont be buying into Genesis9 very heavily-if at all- until I start seeing conversion utilities.  It just makes no financial sense unless something about Genesis 9 is utterly and completely groundbreaking which honestly I cant see happening

I have to add that I very much find myself in the exactly the same mindset.

I bought a fair few of the early G8 figures, but not many recently (not many new figures/character morphs of any generation (even just new to me) at all).

As to full backwards compatibility, I don't see it happening, and if it did, what would be the point, if both G8 and G9 are to all intents and purposes the same?

Personally, I'd like to see a figure optimised for something like games or animation while genesis 8 remains for more detailed work.

(I'd actually like to see a return to the Genesis unisex base experiment, but I don't see that happening)

  • Very unlikely, since I have never really gotten into G8.

I bought a few base figures, not bundles, right away because the promos were "Buy Whoever 8 & get Whoever 6 & 7 free." So I ended up buying the 2 previous generations, which were the ones I wanted, for a total of half the price of just one without the deal. And when/if I was ready to try out G8, I had several of those bases. But I have yet to get into G8, partly for budget, partly because they stopped offering that type of promo, and partly because I wasn't interested in a lot of G8 content.

Yes, I will buy. Each new generation is a new adventure of discovery. I don't buy every character, and I do get annoyed when add-ons for the previous generation don't work, like all of Zev0's morphs. But Zev0 sometimes adds improvements with each generation of product, so that makes purchasing again more palatable.

Same here. I hate rebuying all the same utilities to get the new generation up to speed with the old one. I'm okay with a small license upgrade. But rebuying at the new item price is asking a lot. I want to keep using new generation figures. But, I dread the thought of repurchasing all those morph and skin packages.

Never say never, but probably not much. I'm pretty much invested in Genesis 2 and 3, and a tiny bit of 8 if it was something that struck my fancy. Gen 3 is probably over 70% of my content library so unless there is a compelling need to change or something pops up for Gen 9 that simply doesn't exist for earlier figures, I'll likely more or less stick with what I have. After a time, you've accumulated so much skimpwear and stuff that you really don't need anything but the transfer and fit utilities. and morphs. If Daz won't sell them anymore, then there are places like Renderosity where content creators are still making new products for Vicky 4 through Gen 8; lots of other options to keep my library of earlier figures current for many, many years to come.

I will add this caveat, though: if Gen 9 is easily transferable and usable with Gen 3 and Gen 8, then I may buy a few things. Interoperability is a must! If Daz does this, and either includes autofit capabilities for free or at really seriously reduced prices, then I may well buy more. Otherwise, why spend the cash?

This is a routine, right. Every two years, we will have a new figure. Since the release of Victoria 3, there are the same comments repeating: " Oh no, no new figure, I have invested so much money in (previous) Victoria. I won't switch."

I can't wait for Genesis 9. Allways excited about something new.

  • It depends.

It's easy enough to check the release dates of all the Vicky's still in the store, from 4.2 on. The two year, 24 month cycle for new generation releases actually began with Genesis 3. That was a surpise. I thought, expected, that it's been two years between each of the Genesis generations.

V4.2 was released in December of 2006. Victoria 5 wasn't released until October of 2011. Victoria 6 was released June of 2013, only 20 months later. Victoria 7 and Victoria 8 were both released in June, 2015 and 2017, respectively.

I think it's reasonable to assume Daz will release Genesis 9 in June of this year, even though I'd much rather they didn't release any new generation until it's an appreciable step up from the previous one. Many of us feel like G8 could just as easily been released as 3.1.

i'm only going to be an early adopter if genesis 9 gives the base figures significantly more verts/polys in areas that are currently either underserved, and/or introduces some dforce-level game changing features like softbody dynamics or collision detection.

g8 is finally getting to be fun to work with because our PAs have finally had time to produce and deliver a great working toolset--what, about three-quarters of the way through the generation's prime life cycle?  i don't necessarily mind shelling out to keep those tools current and/or improved, but i'm super not interested in waiting another year and a half to have access to those essentials.

I'll only switch to Genesis 9 if they have an HD addon that's as detailed as Ophelia 7's HD-Addon. If Genesis 9 female doesn't have a proper HD-addon, then no, I won't use it and will be forced to stay with Genesis 3 using Ophelia 7 HD addon.

I’d like a return to unisex that somehow magically avoided all the problems that the approach has.

Gen 9?  Heck yeah, sign me up!  Why not?  I still use Vickie 4, Genesis, G2, G3, G6, G7 and G8 - whatever is cool and floats my boat gets used. I'm even happy to buy fully stand alone characters if I think they are cool.

I'm sorry, what was the question?

Out of curiosity what was the lead time for marketing Gen 8? Was there official word weeks beforehand or were people expecting  Gilligan 7 when Victoria 8 appeared instead without notice?

    NICE history layout there.

Well for all those that aren't looking forward to Genesis 9... keep in mind that we will get the free Genesis 9 essentials first and that will give folks a chance to play with the figures to see if it's something greatly improved or a meh reaction!  lol

I look forward to every new generation because, so far, in my opinion anyway, each generation has gotten more and more realistic. Edward 8 is the most realistic character I've seen yet. The skins get more detailed and realistic. I rarely use anything below Genesis 8 anymore. I use only a couple G3 characters.  I can't wait to see what we will get next.

If I remember correctly Genesis was released before Victoria 5 there was more of a gap than with other figures, so the 2 years is possible from the release of Genesis to the release of Genesis 2 rather than Victoria to Victoria.

I recall a marketing slip up where some Genesis 8 adverts were sent out a few days before the official launch, but on the whole DAZ are pretty good at keeping upcoming releases secret. I do remember that amongst forumites the arrival of Genesis 4 (or 8 as it turned out to be) had been anticipated for some time before it was live, and it appeared around the time many had guessed (ie 2 years after G3 was released).

Having said that, nothing is certain. Since G8 is already a pretty good figure, then making any significant improvements will need a considerable effort, and could need more than the 2 years of a typical cycle.

  • Personally, I think they should lead with Michael 9.

I would love to get back to a unimesh product like Genesis the first generation, this gave us the ability to really play with any new character and adapt a male or female version of the specialty characters!

Starting Genesis 9 with any male figure, instead of the female, would be a shock. But I have to agree with @Daikatana; It would be the best way to turn me into an early adopter, too!

I didn't know that. I just looked up the date for the Genesis Starter Essentials. It was August of 2012, so around two months before V5. Still only 22 months, but much closer to the 2 year mark.

I'm sure it will be coming sooner than later.

But I hope it brings more to the table than better bending, which is the only thing I remember about the Gen 8 launch.

A more subtle knee bend is not really worth the hundreds of the dollars to upgrade, convert, and morph everything so you can actually use your library.

I mean... unless you're really into knees... then... more power to you.  :)

Even today, Gen 3 is still my #1 figure.  Gen 2 and Gen 8 are probably tied at #2.  Gen at #3.  So in the end?  I still use them all.  So don't feel so bad about the coming next gen.  If it brings more to the table?  Then great!  Sign me up.  If it doesn't, it can share a place with Gen 2 and Gen 8.  :)

I think they should lead with the Genesis 9 Female and Genesis 9 Male bases on the same week as part of the Genesis 9 Essentials followed quickly by G9F/G9M Head, Body, & Expressions Morphs in the same month followed by G9M/G9F based character such as Maxx 9 HD / Maxxine 9 HD the following month.

I wouldn't even go so far as to say that G8 bends better. In some cases, it's worse. I don't remember the G3's having that "twisty" bicep problem when the forearm at 90 degrees and the upper arm is rotated so that it's straight up like the G8's do. I also didn't like that the heel bone was removed in the foot either. Having said all that, I do use ALL the Genesis generations and I'm sure if something new moves me, I'll get it ;).
