A good Daz3D produced and supported bridge to Octane renderer would make a huge difference to the User base here, and free many from the restrictions of GPU memory limitations.
Infact with all the bridges that have been put out recenty I'm surprised that this hasnt happened yet.
There is a free version of Octane in Unity, so you could try it there with Daz Bridge to Unity.

First, DAZ's main strength is humans. Photorealism in today's 3D world regarding humans is more or less producing results that fool the human eye, the sort of digital humans where the average viewer cannot distinguish between render and photo.
While I don't doubt DAZ can achieve moving their platform there, I think they will compromise here more or less because this interferes with some points where they are really good at. Today's digital humans, that kind of hyper realistic models, have an awful amounts of details, this is essential to what makes them look so realistic. The assets of various digital human scans, the amount of details you see on pro artist sculpts, demonstrate this.
This can all be done using DAZ figures and DS, too. The conversion of Underbelly kind if shows this. But not all DAZ figures, and certainly not their flagship line of Victoria and Michael, will move to that direction.
DAZ does very well with bringing 3D Art to people who just want to click and render. You don't have to model, texture, setup shader networks and materials and don't even have to study lighting setups and you can create 3D Art. Of course, your renders won't look as good as when you go deeper into these topics but DAZ provides excellent products when you just want to create renders made with pre-made assets. In a way DAZ has brought simplicity to the world of rendering 3D humans accessible to a broad range of audiences. This leaves particular restraints for people who don't want or don't need it do easy, especially regarding functionality of DAZ Studio.
One of DAZ's strongest features is the level of customization. Although DAZ largely expanded their line of core figures many characters are still intended as bases, to an extent, in particular Victoria and Michael. DAZ has always focused on the aspect that users can create their own characters and combine maps and morphs as they see fit to create their own versions of the Genesis figures, all with pre-made assets, and they are successful with this. Even their HD morphs are interchangeable to a certain extent. This brings automatically the aspect that characters that allow for customization cannot have too many details - unique maps and shapes are more difficult to adapt to characters with different features. Given that artists have managed to create characters of different ethnicity than Victoria and Michael in their base versions this shows they are versatile enough as bases but also, that they lack specific detail to make them more customizable.
Now DAZ can combine both to an extent - release dome highly unique characters that have more details but are not customizable, and also release more generic characters that make good bases - they already this this, Underbelly is an example of that. Financially I don't know in what ratio this is most profitable for them, whether it's 1 to 1 or 20 to 1 ...
I think future DAZ releases will move closer to photorealism in a sense that we will see certain characters that are more realistic and have more details and more advanced shaders. But I also don't think that means per se G9 as a whole will become more realistic in a sense that you load up Victoria 9 and she looks like a sister of digital Emily.
There's been no indication that Daz has such knowledge or resources. It would probably have to come from a third-party.
Nvidia?
I doubt G8 will get official Poser support. They seem satisfied with their own characters.
The reason I mentioned lack of interopability as a factor was, I remember when earlier Genesis figures came out and, along with weight maps, people were saying the texture map (or UV or whatever they call it) had been completely changed to make it incompatible with everything before it. And there were people who seemed to think G8 wasn't necessarily an upgrade from G&, which would suggest generating sales might be a higher priority than creating a better product.
I think if this GAN thing were to be used, it wouldn't require a new figure. It would just have to be good at applying settings to whatever is in the scene. One good starting point would be facial expressions. If you set a facial expression, one half of the GAN could adjust every facial feature to be something other than default but still fit that expression (or lack of expression without looking dead) and the other half of the GAN could decide whether the expression fits the description or needs to be regenerated. But it would depend on there being good expressions in the first place so the AI could learn from it, and they'd have to be available to the AI. But that would depend on people, who are really good at this, sharing their settings. And maybe it's just me but it seems like a lot of them don't like to do that.
What do you mean by "texture map (or UV or whatever they call it) had been completely changed to make it incompatible with everything before it"? Genesis could use the fourth fgeneration Daz figures' maps (Victoria 4, Michael 4, Kids 4) out of the box. Genesis 3 changed the way the surfaces were split into groups, which meant they couldn't simply reapply the older maps with a new set of UVs but it didn't break any compatibility at the application level.
Those are good points. Some of it, I'm not sure about the details. A lot of the changes and upgrades I've seen suggested should not require a new figure, either. I see no particular downside to broader compatibility, even Poser compatibility. But I think Daz as a company would want to avoid providing technical support to customers for compatibility in a competing product. That is, if Poser's devs want Poser to be G8 compatible, great! But it's up to them to take care of all that. And so far, Poser doesn't seem to be able to do it, at least not the same way as in DS.
In my understanding the overall situation is a bit complicated. In the last months the system requirements increased, for example with the Egyptian outfits - basically Daz forces us to upgrade to newer Nvidia cards. I would assume with Gen 9 and Daz 5 being a substantial leap, most of us would need to invest in new hardware and new content - not knowing when Covid will end and how it impacts economy, I wonder how big the market for this would be in 2021 or 2022?
Additionally, and this probably the wrong place to discuss, Daz sales were always driven by good looking women in high heels and minimal clothing. Obviously this resulted in many pictures without clothing on sites like DeviantArt. Currently, there is a huge purge going on for "Adult Artists" on DeviantArt, profiles being deleted without warning and communications getting lost.
The thrill seems gone.
I haven't noticed DAZ driving this trend, but the PA-made content has been gaining "weight", sometimes even without any benefit.
Has some modelling/texturing program released a new version or has DAZ recruited a bunch of "technically challenced" new creators?
Not sure who is driving this, but I could render scenes in Daz 4.9 with up to 9 G8 characters on GPU, and would have to render the same scene on CPU in Daz 4.12.
Nvidia made the changes to iray after 4.11 so they are driving this
Nvidia manufacture graphics cards
make of that what you will
GPU manufacturer driving the trend that makes people buy newer and more expensive GPU:s... Who would've thought
If you are using a pre-RTX card, which I guess you are, then more code is being sent over (to minic the RTX featuers) in recent builds of Iray. You may want to look at Scene Optimiser or the Resource Saver Shaders sets.
Gimme a new CAT before any G9 character!
The lovely little G4 cat we have is so way behind even to the other animals, that I rarely use her in spite of loving cats.
A new cat with new bends, poses, races, fibermesh hair, colours, kittens, playthings et cetera and I'd be in HEAVEN!
+1.
Not that I come up short, having 3 at home. We used to have #4 too, but he passed away due to collapsed lungs & extreme heart disease.
My problem with different classes of character is the amazingly annoying way you have to navigate the menu structure when using two different. For example, posing a Genesis 8 character and Freak 4 at the same time is amazingly annoying. Select a pose on Genesis 8, then back to Freak, then back to Genesis 8 then back to...
I honestly don't want to keep playing the nvidia upgrade game. It seems with every build and every new version of Studio I can do less than I used to. I don't see much reason to move to gen 9 unless there really is an improvement.
this is where multiple content library tabs would be useful
Unreal Editor can have multiple content browsers and it is an exceedingly useful thing
The thing about the surfaces being grouped differently is what I was talking about, and also what spawned my speculation about how the new Genesis figure might comnbine the arm and foot texture for no reason. I wasn't sure which Genesis version it started with but I figured any Genesis version before G8 would count as an earlier Genesis version. I do remember somebody saying there was some practical reason for the rearrangement of the textures. But I've always felt backwards compatibility would have been more desirable.
Also note that a G& is what you get if you want to type G7, hold down the shift key and type G, and manage to type a 7 before you release the shift key.
It's been 3 years since Michael 8 dropped. I'm starting to think the developers at DAZ3D have fizzled out.
Maybe they've pushed the software to its limit.
Maybe their software is being redesigned for something amazing.
Either way, their silence is deafening. They always used to feed us tidbits to keep us excited.
You have noticed that they are still releasing a varied cast of new characters for Genesis 8 M&F haven't you?
lol What now? "developers fizzled out"? Since the release of G8, we've gotten dForce cloth simulation, Strand-Based and dForce Hair, Filament, and other upgrades to Daz Studio. Just looking at the beta and public build release notes for each new Daz Studio update and see they're constantly working to try to improve rendering quality and overall Daz Studio performance and working with NVidia to update and improve things and generally bring more and more options to the users. Just because we haven't had "Genesis 9" doesn't mean the developers have fizzled out. And if one can infer anything from these threads is that people are much more interested in updates to Daz Studio and new features then they are just having a new figure. That's just my personal opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt. :)
the only reason to go to 9 is for a significant upgrade to the base figures. If there isn't a major upgrade, what is the point to go to 9 except to charge more money for the lineup over again?
There are a few things I'd like to see that would compel me to invest in a new generation (though I'd love them more as upgrades to Genesis 8), but for the most part I am more interested in physics: fluid/mud/slime/etc. simulation, cell fracture for breaking windows, the ability to make fluids affect dynamic hair and maybe even materials.
And honestly with COVID. there are allot of folks on very strict budgets right now due to job insecurities. I'm kinda over Genesis for the time being. Too much going on and it's like eating your favorite food until your sick to death of it and hope you never have to eat it again. I've found other figures to keep me happy for now. I'm with Serene, unless there are MAJOR upgrades to the technology why bother? Soft body dynamics would be nice. Anyways, I'm still lurking and posting there and there but just busy making stuff these days! ENJOY!
None of those are features of the figures, they'd be DS features.
Yes, I've noticed. But they're just slapping lipstick on a pig at this point. Nothing particularly exciting. Time to step up or fall behind.
Fall behind who or what? I'd like to check it out.
