Weird lighting issue

I'm working primarily with indoor scenes and sometimes the scenes are lit well enough that I can use perspective view to pose characters and props etc. without issue and sometimes the scene isn't and the only way I can see the scene well enough to pose characters etc. is to use a camera with a headlamp turned on. The thing is when I render either scene, with the "poorly" lit scene posing camera deleted or at least its headlamp turned off the scenes are lit just fine in both cases, It took me a while to figure out what Iray wants in the way of lighting for indoor scenes but I've got that pretty well licked now. But this baffling lack of lighting in the preview viewport, sometimes, is frustrating me to no end.
Does anyone know what the issue is? If so how do I fix it? Is this simply something to do with how the various indoor scene props are built, since I have been just buying ones that fit my needs from what seem to be well regarded artists.

You can turn on Preview Lights with "Ctrl-L" (not sure what the mac equivalent is). That way you can see the scene to pose and setup without ruining your scene lighting.
