Manifest's New Home?

A few quick question? Can the Install Manger's (Manifest Archive) file be moved onto any drive of my choice? I am assuming you can because it gives you that option. I just need a second opinion from anyone who has done this, any issues? Or is it straight forward? Or is location and placement important? I am trying to set everthing up on a fast external drive. One that can be backed up the fly when needed.

Thanks for any help!

I am advised to tell you

Any non-UNC path (i.e., one that starts with a drive letter or volume label, not a network share that starts with "\\"). Be aware, however, that data access is not only bound by the speed of the device, but also by the speed of the connection (e.g., SATA, USB, FireWire, ethernet, etc). So, for instance, that external super convenient portable USB drive may not be as fast as that internal SSD. Also be aware that changing the path does not automatically copy/move the files contained with that path from the old location to the new.

DIM 1.2 gives new options to easily change the path for thumbnails and manifests, among other things. Before, it could be done manually by editing certain files, but you had to know where to look. Anyway, it is very straightforward, you just set it in the options pane, and that's what will be used from then on (Note: I have moved manifest files in the past with no subsequent problems using the manual method. I have not actually tried it with the new DIM, I have everything set up the way I want, but if that is what it is supposed to do, I have no doubt that it will set, and use, the proper paths). Documentation says it will not move or copy the existing manifest or thumbnail files, you must do that yourself. You will want to move them because that is how DIM knows what has been previously installed, otherwise it will show them as "Ready to Download". If you are hesitant to move them, try copying them first to ensure that it works as expected, then delete the old location. You might have to restart or at least refresh DIM to see the copied/moved manifests/thumbnails.

  • Chohole I understand what you are saying. I have experimented with using an external drive. I have my (user content) setup on one and it works fine, with no issuses whatsoever.

I have being using Studio for about a year now and have being learning what it can and can't do. So, long story shorten, I am getting ready for a clean install that I have in mind, for myself. And I need the info.

Thanks Northof45. Your info is what I wanted to hear. So now I am all set to go.

    Thanks guys!
