Cutting a figure in half

leo04leo04 Posts: 342

I want to cut a figure in half.  I need to do this in order to make a large 3d print of it and in order to do so I need to create two halves.

I have a plane in the image where I want to cut the figure.

See image.

There are a few ways to do that. So do you also want to cut half of her forearm off with the bottom half? You want to render the top half, then separately render the bottom half? It's going to show the hollow interior of the model, is that what you want? Also, are you using Iray?

There are plenty of ways to do it, I'm just asking those basic questions so I can give you a decent answer.

My intent would be to cut at the plane shown but not the arm.  I plan to send it to Game Print to make it watertight then print it in two pieces mating them after the printing to make the figure around 12" tall.  my printer can only print up to about 6.5"...that is my intent.

  • I've heared there are free 3D applications that offer Boolean geometry operations. To name a few Hexagon and Blender. I've also heared Hexagon tends to crash with using boolean operations. I know how it works in Blender but it works best on closed shapes, so you need to replace the plane with a box encapsulating the bottom part of the figure excluding the arm. Then add a Boolean Modifier to the figure or the box can't tell you exactly, this would need some experimentation. Otherwise I've also heared some 3D printers come with software to prepare and split geometry that is too big to print in one go.

Holy crap was I way off. I was thinking you were printing to a poster or something 2 dimensional. Well, I've said it before, I'm from South Carolina and reading isn't our strong point. Yeah, do what Syrus_Dante said. I've used the boolean function in Hexagon, they explain it pretty well in the manual and it works pretty well.

  • Maybe it works better now with the Hexagon update 2.5. About "closed shape" maybe you already know this but for 3D printing you need closed geometry (with no holes) anyway. Make shure to add the 3D printing geografts for the genesis figure mouth and eyes. I had see these items somewhere in my library in the Anatomy folder I think.

Not to worried about making the model watertight. If I can do this in Hexagon then I should be able to get it into Game Print which I have used and it works pretty good I have gotten two models done there and they slice just fine. I cut in Hexagon and then weld the cut closed some how and it should work don't you think?  BTW...what manual?  I haven't seen it. or found it online....

    Thanks.

I don't know how old it is, but it covers all the important stuff.

There is a Hexagon Userguide in PDF format available here:

    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/hexagon/2/userguide/start

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the download.

Also, there is additional information in the Reference Guide here, although not available in PDF that I know of:

A quick easy way, and also closes the hole in the body where you cut, would be to use meshmixer. It's free and specifically made for quick edits to models for 3D printing

Tried that but was unable to make it work...not much help on how to do it that I could find.

Echo this - Meshmixer is free download and powerful, but has a learning curve - as does Daz. The two have rather different p[hilosophies so it's a bit tricky swapping from one to the other,. Spend a bit more time learning how it works, it'll pay off in the end.
