Uber Base Shader [Solved]

AbnerKAbnerK Posts: 718

Hi, I remember reading that it's best apply Uber Base Shader [UBS] to everything before rendering so I have been doing that but realised by doing that my renders take an age. The same render without the UBS is done in a fraction of the time. Eg I applied the UBS to four primitives in my scene last night with two G3 figures, 9 hours later the scene was still at 0%. I've removed those shaders and just applied the same settings without the UBS and after 13 minutes the scene is at the same stage of completion. Am I doing something wrong? Was the advcie terrible? What's the situation?

Thanks

Jim

Edit. After 30 mins the same scene w/o the UBS is at 17% and already looking better.

  • It shouldn't matter, snce DS will apply the Iray Uber Base to recognised 3delight shaders at rnder time if you don't. Applying the sahders manually might save time on repeat rendering, and of course you should do it to surfaces that need adjusting, but it certainly shouldn't have any great impact on time - and such as impact as it does have should be a reduction. Are soem of the surfaces you are changing using custom shaders?

    HI Richard,

thanks. They were simple planes and cubes. I'd previously done a scene with The Roman Baths, and applied the Uber Shader to that, that took forever to get nowhere too but I put it down to lights and materials etc. So I wanted to just get a render out to demo a couple of characters so used the simplest of things I could, 2 planes and 2 cubes, with diffuse turned to black and gloss turned right down to near 0. It was like the Roman Baths scene it just took forever to, literally, get nowhere. I'd even restarted Daz to be sure I was getting a fresh start in case that made any difference. I didn't think it would because my computer only uses CPU anyway. The same scene after removing the custom shader (hence looking for my blank shader preset) and applying the black in diffuse and near zero gloss took 3 hours to get to near completion with iterations set to max. I purposely didn't restart Daz.

  • Please post versions of the scene with and without the Iray Uber Base shader applied.

Thanks Richard, they look itdentical. Or do you mean the duf file?

  • I meant the .duf files

Okay, thanks so much Richard for looking at this. Obviously I had to recreate the Uber file, but I have only done what I did before so I can't imagine what would be any different. I have changed the exposure setting since I did it last night but the resolution size is the same I double checked with the render file I saved. I'm also rendering the Uber again to see if it's the same as last night.

Edit, it's been going for just 30 mins and is 67% done. I really don't know what had gone wrong with it last night. Must have been a glitch. My Daz certainly did gltich yesterday as I lost my CMS connection. I did restart it before I did the render though. Anyway, it looks like you were right as usual. :) I feel better knowing my Daz glitch is fixed and it was just a temporary glitch.

    thanks

    Jim
