Iray Uber Base Shader on everything?

I have a question, I have noticed that in a lot of the YouTube tutorials I see the first step a lot of folks do is to select everything in the scene and apply the Iray Uber Base shadder. This makes sense to me for items that are not native Iray but if you working with characters or objects that are are already optimized for Iray, did you really need to do this? Would you'ld you be overriding the Iray shadders used for the object? Is this really good first step?

If the item already has an Iray based shader, then no, applying Uber doesn't help and could in fact hurt as it may apply default values that override the specific settings the content creator had in mind.
Applying it to surfaces that are configured for 3Delight or Poser *may* help. What it does is to give you a chance to tweak the settings. if you don't do this, Studio automatically converts non-Iray surfaces to it's best guess of what an equivalent Daz Uber shader preset would look like. Most of the time, that's good enough. But some 3Delight / Poser surfaces may do well for you to modify those settings to get the best quality results.
Also, keep in mind the Nvidia reference shaders that are also included. My one minor quibble with the Daz Uber shader is that it has a lot of settings you may never use. If you load the Nvidia presets, most of the time they leave out the code that doesn't have a purpose for that material. So (in theory) those materials should perform a little faster.
It's npot necessary - if the items is using supported 3delight shaders DS wills wap them out at render time. Of course if you are going to be doing a lot of renders of the same scene it may make sense to aply the Iray Uber Base once to avoid all the conversions teps, but that woudl not usaully be the case. Normally you'd apply it only where you wanted to adjust settings, or where the surface was using an unsuported custom sahder and so needed a clean set-up for Iray.
I am trying to replace older model stuff from the 3Delight/Poser surfaces to an iRay gold (trying to make a statue with Aiko 3). Sometimes the iRay shaders take and sometimes they don't. I literally can't seem to replace some. Any advice?
