"Preparing scene" for IRAY Render and Instances

Hi,

I recently bought Terradome 3 and wanted to try it. So I set up a terarain and populated it by UltraScatter with some trees, grass clumps, bushes and so on. Well, "some" miiight be understatement - I put in about 240,000 instances altogether. Then I wanted to render in IRAY preview. I hit the button, then my kids disturbed me.

A few hours later, nothing had changed, but the "Preparing scene" bar moved... and moved... and moved... Since I didn't need my computer this night, I let him work. When I checked this morning, he was still busy.

Now my question is: Does DS really "Prepare scene" for every friggin' item in the scene, including every instance? Because, every "Preparing scene" runs about 10-15 seconds, with 240,000 instances, that's about 27-41 DAYS. What's the purpose of instances if you can't use them in large scenes because they will block your machine literally for weeks?

Be sure to change your Instance Optimization from Speed to Memory in Render Settings before generating all those instances!

Well, they are generated... only the render preparation takes forever. The instances are set up. Do I have to put them in again? Does that change anything for rendering?

You can change the optimization from Speed to Memory after loading the instances, I guess, but do it before clicking the render button. Also, I recommend selecting a very simple instance preview in UltraScatter, like Bounding Box, or your viewport will be very bogged down with that many instances. You might even consider None. Don't select Full with 240,000 instances. I've done 100,000 instances of a simple primitive without too much problem, but I've never tried 240,000 instances of complex objects.

Bounding Box is activated ^^ I don't own the high-high-end machine I'd need to be that careless, as I found out in previous scenes already. XD

Ah, well, I'll try as soon as the portrait render currently running is done. If I should guess, it'll kill my 32GB RAM + 6 GB VRAM memory anyways. I tend to do oversized scenes. I was just curious if DS really exports one item by one "preparing scene" process even for instances. If it does, I'm doomed ^^

That's awesome. I've never gotten above 50 or so instances, but I didn't put much time into it. I'm curious to see how this turns out.

It rendered now *Yieppieh*. Although, I won't show it, because I didn't tweak the shaders yet because I feared memory overflow if I put in Translucency or SSS. Since the scene didn't grow above 12,5 GB (ō.Ô I'm amazed!), I'll do it now, but I'm away for the weekend. Ah, time for my machine to work. Volumetric atmosphere, here I come! See you on Monday ^^ Have a nice weekend :D

Did it :) Seems like something with the specularity is off on the fir trees, and I should rework the purple blossoms, but the rest looks fine (yep, the non-contrast lighting is intended - will do next one with sunlight).

No postwork apart from sig and saving as .jpg.
