Surfaces (editor) not showing

I came across this strange thing. In the Surfaces pane, Editor tab, normally when you choose a surface it shows all the surfaces properties on the right screen of the pane. But for some reason I can't explain it isn't showing now. Anyone has a clue how to solve this?

Try putting a checkmark on the  Show Sub Items checkbox shown in the very lower left of your screenshot.

I was covinced that I had tried that already. Perhaps restarting the system changed that.
