Setting up computers to work together on a net render.

Hi i'm a fairly new user.  My name is Shawn and I have been trying for many months now to get Carrara 8.5 64 bit to render with other computers.  I have set up other machines as describe in the tutorial.  Changed the IP address and subnet mask from settings in CMD on master render pc.  I have set up the render farm with many different hardware configurations.  I used wireless and I tried using a switch to connect all the nodes.  Now I am using a wireless router but have the internet turned off so just the PCs are connected no other interference.  Still nothing working except the master rendering pc.  Under render nodes it just says local host.  I am running win 7 pro 64 bit and win 10.  Would it help to connect the master render machine to the router via a usb cable?  Any help would be greatly apreciated.  It takes a ton of rendering power to make better animations and that's what it's all about for me. =D
