How do i make an object texture lighter in Iray?

I am far more familiar with 3Delight use of the diffuse channel, but i am trying to work with Iray now.  But i can't figure out how to make a texture look lighter (or darker).  There are so many technical terms i am not familiar with!  I don't even know what to look for in articles.  Help!  I'm sure it is very simple--but i'm not grokking it.

Base color is what is closest in Iray to diffuse in 3DL.

It is long ago I have used 3DL.

But there are many ither channels contributing in Iray to how the surface will end up. And be aware that there can be quite a difference from preview to rendered.

This is in my view a good overview of the surface tab https://www.deviantart.com/sickleyield/journal/Iray-Surfaces-And-What-They-Mean-519346747

But if you just want to shade something darker, you should be able to just set the color in Base Color darker.

Another IRay surface parameter which affects how light/dark a surface appears is the Translucency Weight. I often tinker with that before the base colour (I'm mostly talking about skin here but I guess the same applies to other materials).

  • Rhank you very much--this is an excellent start for me!
