Bulking up hair for 3D printing?

Hey guys,

I want to print a one off model for myself, but the damn hair ... I use Meshmixer or Netfabb and they both clean up the model just fine, but the hair.. The tiny strands just mess up everything.

Is there any way software out there that can make the hair clump into more of a cartoony look? Inflating small objects and then remeshing the hair model to make it water tight, but I can't find a tool that can automatically inflate thin objects. My last resort would be to spend days in Sculptris or something, but I'm sure there is a tool for this out there somewhere.

You could create a concave or convex hull out of all hair strands, but I think you would lose a lot of strand detail.

Maybe use a combination of things. Create a hull to get a basis shape, then with a second copy, extrude all hair strands inwards to make it blocky and use a boolean to bind it all together.

Oh, and just a thought, mesh tools don't understand hair transparency, so all of that 'wispy hair' detail will be lost too.
