Integrated + dedicated graphics build for DAZ3D Iray

Hey everyone I had a question regarding my new pc build for Daz3d. I hope this is the right forum section.

So I had this idea of using a cpu with integrated graphics for windows and display while using a dedicated card for solely daz3d viewport and rendering. This way i might save some of the gpu ram used by the windows and monitor. The cpu and gpu I plan to buy are:

Cpu: Ryzen 5 2400G with Vega 11 integrated graphics

Gpu: Nvdia RTX 2070

So my question is:

Will it be possible for me to use integrated Vega 11 for monitor display and windows while using RTX 2070 only for Daz3d viewport applications like dforce and I ray rendering?

Note: My scenes use a lot of gpu ram and I was planning to buy 11gb 1080 ti since i can't afford a 2080 ti. Then I thought a 2070 would be better and faster in future with new technology. But since it has lower memory I came up with this idea of using a cpu with integrated graphics.

  • Theoretically, I think, yes. I'm not entirely sure about the viewport. That might go through the GPU that is driving the monitor. But you can certainly render with a dedicated card.

When you setup the computer just plug the monitor into the motherboards graphic outputs not the ones coming from the card and install the Vega drivers as well as the Nvidia ones. Windows should automatically detect where the monitor is connected.

Do not expect very much from that 2400G as far as graphics go BTW. It's better than Intel integrated graphics so it will play video and let you play some games but don't ask it to play any recent AAA titles at high framerates.

  • Thank you for the confirmation. Yes I plan to use this computer mostly for Daz3d.

I heard that with latest update of windows it will allow us to select any graphics card on our motherboard to use for specific applications. I wonder how would that work for daz? Because not being able to use my 2070 for more responsive Iray viewport wouldn't be desirable.

  • I have no idea. You'll have to try it out. Honestly if your monitor is 1080p, or lower, resolution the amount of VRAM taken up just driving one monitor, with Daz open, is only something like 300 Mb. It might occasionally make the difference between going to CPU but that's an awfully small margin to be worrying about out of 8Gb. I think if you are strictly rendering and not trying to multitask during a render you could safely drive the monitor through the 2070.
