After Daz3d re-install Files Can Not Be Found

Last week one of my many harddrives crashed. The good news is that it wasn't the one with all my Daz3d project files or content on it. The bad news is that it was the one with the Daz3d application on it.

I reinstalled Daz on a new drive and pointed it to the location of all my content. The same location it was before. But now when I open any of these files next to nothing loads - from hair to shoes I get a "files cannot be found error" even though they are exactly where they were before - drive letter, path - everything is unchanged.

Someone in another thread described how you can load the items that make up the old scene into a new scene and save that as temp.daz. If you do that for all of the items in the scene it should recreate the missing files and allow you to open the old scene file. I tested this and it does work and on a small scale it would be reasonable. But I now have hundreds of daz files that won't load.

Please tell me there is a solution that doesn't involve loading thousands of various clothes and enviroment objects into temp files to get my work back? :(

  • Which version of Daz Studio is this? Help>About Daz Studio. Are these .daz files or .duf? The latter shouldn't need anything resaving for native content and imported/created geometry (they will for Poser content though) - but only if you lost your first Daz Studio Format content directory, otherwise the auto-gernated files should still be there. Since you can load the content and resave i assume this is affecting only saved scenes? One possible source of errors is if you had nested content directories - one content directory inside another.

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for responding.

The projects are saved as .daz files running on daz3d ver. 3.1.2.32. I upgraded to Daz 4 once upon a time and had problems with it. I plan to revisit that later but for now I'm just trying to get these files running again in their ... original/intended(?)....version.

In regards to the poser question  - I confess I never grasped where the separation was between poser content and native content. Most of my files (ie: clothes, trees, etc) come from places like sharecg. I manually put them in their respective runtime paths (ie: geometry, texture and library) in what Daz's content directory identifies as the "Poser Formats" (see screenshot). But does that make them Poser file? Sorry if I'm mudding things up with my poor words. Hopefully the screenshot will help answer your question.

  • What is your directory setting for DS content? (Poser content is converted on load, and has very different and much stricter requirements for the folder structure - that is why theya re treated separately.)

My setting? If you mean the path for the content directory it's "C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio3\content".

  • Are those the same as on the old machine (give or take drive letter and user name)?

The stuff on F drive is in the same place with the same path. The C drive contents I'm not so sure of.

  • Please post screenshots of the errors you are getting.

Please post screenshots of the errors you are getting.

Here is the error message. This message pops up and then I click OK and the scene loads. None of the objects can be seen and yet the objects appear in the surfaces and also the scenes list. It's like they are invisible or something.

Now if I were to load those "invisible" items that make up the old scene into a new scene and save that as a new .daz file and then reload the project file the items will appear now.

  • If you then go to Help>Troubleshhoting>View Log File, scroll right to the end, and work backwards you will find the precise files that are apparently missing.
