Hard Drive and Content storage question

Hi,

I have what I hope is a simple question on Hard drives and content storage.

I have quite a bit of 3rd party content on an old FreeAgent Hard drive.  I've been a bit worried about it since its been in service a long time.  To be specific.  The Volume was created in September 2008.  So it a bit over 10 years old and still running fine.  But I'm beginning to think I'm pushing my luck on its age.  Now  Heres the thing.  Some of this content is being used in various projects I'm still working on.  So I want to still be able to open these files.  Now the question:

If I buy another drive, (possibly another FreeAgent drive)  And it has the exact same name on my desktop.  Does that mean Daz will just be able to access it as before and wont even notice the change?

2ndly, If I get say a LaCie or some other brand drive.  And just change the name to FreeAgent Drive.  Will that cause problems or not?

Thanks.

Dale

  • As long as the content you used was in a content directory then it doesn't matter what the drive is called or which letter it uses, or even what the content diectory itself is called. All DS stores, for content from a mapped diectory, is the relative path within the content directory - so if you used a texture stored in G:/My Third Party Stuff/SomeStore/Runtime/Textures/ThingysStuff/HiDetailMap.jpg and had G:/My Third Party Stuff/SomeStore/ set as a content directory then all the scene or prest files contain will be /Runtime/Textures/ThingysStuff/HiDetailMap.jpg, and the stuff will still load if it is on K:/New drive/3rd Part/ThatStore/Runtime/Textures/ThingysStuff/HiDetailMap.jpg as long as you have K:/New drive/3rd Part/ThatStore/ set as a content directory.

  • Ok,  Thanks.

Assuming that you are going to get the new drive, Dale, might I recommend that you take the old one offline after copying the contents to the new one? That way, you have a backup copy of your content as a hedge against a drive failure. Perhaps you have already thought of this yourself, but it still bears mentioning.

  • Ys,  Thanks for the advice
