A Challenge for David Brinnen.
We are looking for a simple, easy to replicate way of generating "Toon" shaders int the Bryce DTE. Using Bryce 5 of course. as both the people who are interested use B5 still.
So can you come up with an easy recipe for us.
Both of us have a habit of doing well in the particular challenge that we need these for, and I personally tend to think that this challenge was designed to make sure we didn't have a chance. :)
Seriously is there any easy way to do this. If anyone would know it would have to be you.
Challenge is to produce a comic style render without postworking it.
nothing too fancy, mind because we have to have quite a few things in the render as well, so it needs to be quick and easy.

Oh, that's an easy one - there are already tutorials (minitut_19) as well as on the Mentoring DVD. Here are three examples:

Horo pipped me to the post. OK so yes, http://www.horo.ch/raytracing/tuts/online/tut19/minitut19_en.html also, even though you are not using Bryce 7 Pro, it may still be worth your while looking at the cel shading video tutorials on the DVD as many of the same concepts can be applied to Bryce 5.
If you run into a specific issue, you can always post me the source and I will modify the file accordingly. I can see I have at least four versions of Bryce sat on my desktop. So it is all possible - I just have to be careful I pick the right version... It can be very confusing sometimes.
CEL (contour enhanced lines) and Toon (cartoon) shading are often mixed up. In fact, that is what I usually do ... But both are quite alike but not completely similar. Both can be done in Bryce. Toon shading is easier (specularity is the secret) than true CEL shading (negative lights must be used). Here's an attempt: http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=4621 the idea was hatching, but the contours are enhanced.
I actually need this more for the other person I mentioned, as hs I am a member of the team that runs the challenge, so actually only enter on occasion. He only uses B5, for the same reasons I do, and doesn't have the DVD.
I will point him to the mini tut anyway, thanks.
We just like proving that Bryce can challenge the rest, and he does regularly place. He has a character that features regularly, who I am sure would do well with toon shading as a comic render. I attach here a copy of one of his entries for the "Summer Fun and PIN UPS " challenge.
Set up in DS rendered in B5 http://www.daz3d.com/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=41&aid=5050_DCzDws4wpm91J8le7TJ8&board_id=1
linked to rather than displayed, just beacuse someone wants to object.
For clarification the TOS states that
which is a slightly different thing to a tongue in cheek render which shows nothing of note.
Horo and David, my friend says thanks for the link to that tut. He will have a look at it
Oh great...now I'm in trouble. I'm gonna get banned! *whine*
LOL Hi LG, glad to see you wander over here. You should visit the Bryce forum more often
OK here's the set up. Default Bryce sky settings apply.
1 - good old Stanford Dragon, a Vicki, a Bryce sphere and an infinite plane - all selected. Modify the materials.
2 - the key is to set the Specular Halo to fully white.
3 - ambient (global is set to grey as default) controls the appearance of the shadow regions and specular the lit area. No diffusion needed.
4 - modified the ground plane alone to this. Again no diffusion.
5 - This is a start then. But even in Bryce 5 it's possible to create a more exotic effect...
Now to do something a little bit crafty...
1 - select the perspective camera.
2 - edit > copy matrix.
3 - create a radial light and edit it.
4 - no diffusion needed and set specular to maximum.
5 - use edit > paste matrix - this will put the light on top of the camera origin.
1 - create another radial light, use fully negative secularity and apply paste matrix to put that also on top of the camera.
2 - now set movement to object space. This will mean the negative light - which should be still selected, can now move back and forth in line with the camera Z axis.
3 - move the negative light back a bit.
4 - gives this effect.
5 - then fine tune the positive light.
1 - using the preview window set the specular effect down to get the effect you want.
2 - the final result of this tweaking. Although not as sophisticated as the effects possible in 7.1 pro, you can still achieve some outlining in 5 using negative lighting.
My offer still stands, if you get stuck, send me the source to modify.
3 - here's were you set your light in Bryce 5 - controlling the specular effect through the material and turning off diffuse accordingly. Though, anyone familiar with Bryce 5 would already know that, I include this for those that only know Bryce 7.1 pro but are curious how things were before.
which is a slightly different thing to a tongue in cheek render which shows nothing of note.
LOL!! Thanks, that pic made my day :coolcheese:
Glad you enjoyed it. It is not my image, but one done by Lord Ganthor, who was surprised and amused to see it in the Bryce forum.
Da Real Man has quite a fan club. I forget how many renders he has appeared in so far.
David this is great, really must find some time to have a play. Thankyou
Thank you David for doing this, looks wonderful :)
You are welcome. Quick question, is their any way to get at the other half a dozen or so mini-tutorials that I put on the old forum, or are those lost forever now?
Do you mean the updates to the Bryce tutorials I did last night? I only updated the new thread on this forum, I haven't been to the old thread, if I can be of any help tho. :)
I do not know. The tutorials I refer to were forum threads such as this where someone would ask a question and I would put forwards an answer in the form of a series of images and brief instructions associated with those images. They lived on the old forum. I would resurrect them if the old forum exists in some form or other that can be effectively searched. Here is a list see if it rings any bells.
Making a control knob using anisotropic shading.
Curvature and texture baking.
Curvature and landscapes.
Fire and rainbow knurling materials projects.
Using images in heightmaps to create realistic surface displacement.
Creating a wandering non repeating cellular material.
Putting a large moon in the sky.
Northern light material effect.
How to make snow settle on objects.
That kind of thing.
David, the forums are accessible, but in read only format, so things like search don't work so it's a case of manually searching through to find them
However unfortunately the images don't show up in the archinved forum, although they as still there. You will see just an HTML image tag.like this
If you take postimages/origimage_1_3414701.jpg and add it to http://forumarchive.daz3d.com/ you will then get http://forumarchive.daz3d.com/postimages/origimage_1_3414701.jpg which then shows the image which you can then save to your PC.
A long winded way of doing things I know, and not at all ideal, but it is all we have at present.
Thanks Pam. OK well, I'll have a looksee. I have a knack for dredging stuff out of websites.
I am hoping to use google's search site feature, along these sort of lines...
site:forum.daz3d.com Making a control knob using anisotropic shading
but have not had any luck with the first one on the list, but I will persevere and who knows, we might get lucky :)
And we're off!!
Good going, now there is just the matter of the images...
Is there a firefox plugin that works, redirects the old forum link and displays images?
Ian, we have had some success using site:forumarchive.daz3d.com instead of just site:forum.daz3d.com, with finding links that is, not about the images.
I was using the old domain as I figured it would yield more results, I will use the new domain when i have gone thru the list once and redo the search. The links I have posted are the updated ones from the initial search :-)
You are very good at this.
Thanks, but only 4 out of 9 successful, using the forumarchive domain in the search yielded no results at all.
Be well :)
Only 4 i'm afraid, sorry.
Ian.
Ah well, back to doing it the hard way.
I guess so, I don't know what else to try, until login and search is available on the old forum,
