Expression organizer?

Hello All,

Is there an expression organizer out there similar to ManFriday's Turbo Content that groups expressions by mood, etc. I've got a MILLION expressions, mostly as groups by character or package; it's a totall pain to go looking for that perfect smile or scream or whatever when they're scattered across the "Expressions" tree.

How does everyone else handle this problem? Is there a built-in filter that I'm not seeing? ARGH!

Erik

I wish there was a better way to organize them. My current method is to install, test them, if I don't like them, I chuck the ones that look weird. Not scientific I know. But expressions can cause figures to load slowly, so I have to prune them back periodically.

I find expressions and poses difficult to organise. I use custom categories and it's easy to sort out clothes into categories like casual, smart, fantasy and SF etc but most sets of expressions have a range of emotions and pose sets often include a range of actions so I usually can't decide how to categorise them. I suppose I could categorise each expression or pose in each set seperatly but that would take a long time.

And loading times are really annoying. It now takes a long time to load any Genesis 8 female on my system, loading a scene with two or three figures in it is terrible. I wish they had stayed with the Generation 4 system of using injection poses to load morphs rather than always loading everything. One of the things on my to-do list is to find out how Studio decides what morphs to load and see if it is possible to write a script to control this. But that's probably a long way off since I don't know anything about the internal workings of Studio and haven't started learning Studio scripting yet.

  • I think expressions and poses are a mess at the moment. The thumbnails are most often not very helpful, naming is not intuitive (naming an expression as "Expression 01" does not help much), the tip files with larger images most often do not exist, and the images on the expression morph sliders are way too small to see anything. Given that, the metadata are often not maintained well, so its is a lot of wild guessing and trial and error. An expression or pose set for multiple generations or for male and female characters will add to that mess.

If anyone comes up with a "Turbo Pose" or "Turbo Expressions" tool, I would immediately buy it, even for full price.

Thank you all for your comments.

Unfortunately, they are all wrong, as they don't begin with "Yes, I have the perfect solution that works in all cases, and it is [insert answer here]"   sad

Seriously though, I guess there's some solace in the fact that it's not just me. And I agree, barring a better way to tag them at the source (via the content creators), any after-the-fact means of sorting/searching is only going to be a marginal improvement. Even something as simple as a naming format of "blahblah - angry" or "blah-blah - scared" would be very helpful, as searching would be much more accurate. My 2 cents.

    Thanks again for the input!

At least with poses, there are some basic categories like "combat" or "standing".  One can quibble about what's what, but at least there's a structure.   There are no such existing categories for expressions.  I wouldn't hold out much hope for any to be added for G8, either.

  • It's a common answer.  Categories are your friend.  Create your own, then you can have the Figure, say Genesis 8 Female -> Expressions -> Type of expression.

I get it, it's some work.  I wish it was better, but keep in mind it's a conglemeration of numerous PAs, and therefore inconsistent.  Like herding cats.  laugh

  • I hope no one will be offended if I mention my XprssnMagic products. The first was born long ago from exactly this frustration in saving and organizing expressions for the original Poser 4 female figure.

They are all ready-made expressions, of course, but you can combine, see large previews, front and side, then import via script hundreds of eye and mouth combinations. I still use them all myself constantly, often as a fast short-cut starting point to be tweaked. Hoping this is some help - Elisa

The thing is, they won't work on actual Macs, for example. 32bit apps are no longer supported since macOS 10.15 (Catalina), and the Shockwave interface is no help either, as that product has reached its end of life in August 2019. I would love to have such a tool.

    Script is ok except...

You can't browse expressions by using up and down arrow keys on the keyboard. Clicking on each item every time is a pain to pick the right one mouth or eye shape. Even my mouse wheel won't scroll it. This should be fixed

    Hello Elisa,
I still find the programs (especially the PC version) great and useful. Since I don't feel like trying hundreds of controllers all the time, or spilling and searching 50,000+ files of possible expressions on the hard drive -> this is a good, clean solution.yes

XprssnMagic is therefore a really cool idea to bring the rough direction of an expression into the figure very quickly using a copy-to-clipboard. You can then optimize the rest of the figure later.

I've bought a couple of versions for DAZ People over the years, use them here and there. Was there a version of P4 Woman (Posette) on the "Content Paradise" market? Was that at the time when you also sold the versions for Jessi and Sydney? Is the first version still available in any market?

    Best regards

I went through and deleted all my expressions for G8M. The performance increase was palpale. I then tried to download one set at a time, and test them, and delete the ones that looked weird. But then I bought a few more product bundles and now I have hundreds more expressions. Every pose bundle now seems to include even more expressions.

I will try to do a purge and remove them all again, but with the new G8.1 expression sets, I may simply get rid of all the G8M originals, and start organizing wtih the new ones.

The expressions often come with aliases too, to show them when for example only the head is selected... Convenient in a way, but as all the expressions do not include aliases, you still have to go back to the base figure to see all of them.

I categorically delete all the aliases that are not under "...\Morphs\DAZ 3D\" which does have an effect on loading times and also gets rid of some hard to find warnings in the log.

The Genesis 1-8 system is ok, the advantages predominate, only you shouldn't load all the characters including morphs - only those you really need and want again and again.

In the DAZ Installmanager you can easily reduce the Genesis8 by uninstalling some useless or unused items. In DAZ IM you can also manage selections and export them as CSV-files.

You can also use several runtime folders and deactivate them if necessary.

Do you need all Generation8-Characters for Genesis8Female (57!) Or Genesis8Male (36!) You bought at the same time? [YES / NO]
Do you need 1,000 3rd party characters for Genesis8Female / Genesis8Male at the same time? [YES / NO]
Do you need all the morphing kits like monsters, noses, legs, arms, faces, animal transformations? [YES / NO]

If you manage to reduce your favorite Genesis8 to a minimum, it loads quickly. It's just a bit of work.

    best regards
