Yeah, I was talking about this with a bunch of other artist on FB when the news broke, and we'd all agreed that it was sad that he had such a huge influence over an entire generation of artists, but younger folks wouldn't even understand how revolutionary his stuff was at the time, let alone how incredibly difficult it was to achieve what he did with the technology that was available.  The fact that he was painting his own color seperations by hand in order to get those incredibly pure colors totally blew me away when I first learned how he was doing it in the late 70s.  Truly an amazing, out-of-the-box thinker.

The Youtube show Cartoonist Kayfabe dipped into Corben a few times. Here's one:

I'd reccommend the channel to anyone interested in comics.

Damn, that's sad news. His (comic) work made quite an impression on me back in the day. Those colours! And those... rounded forms just popping out of the page, really. Such a unique look.

It looks like his artistic prime was before my time so, unfortunately, I hadn't heard of him. But I did see that he did the album cover for Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" album. After seeing the image of the album cover at the above linked article it triggered a memory of seeing that artwork among my mom's old records. I remember I used to sit in our living room when I was a kid and look through her boxes of records - that one was among them and it made an impression for sure. I think those albums of my moms and the insanely cool art on a lot of them is one of the things that sparked my love of art. It's sad that he's gone, but his art will live on.

This album cover art both creeped me out and at the same time fascinated me when I was a kid. lol

Rest in Peace, Richard Corben. Thank you for sharing your creativity and artistic skill with the world.

Thank you for the tip! While that particular video and horror art isn't something I'm into I'm glad you recommended the Youtube channel, as it looks like he has a lot of great comic book related content! :D Thanks!

Never heart of him but today I thought briefly of those crazy album covers I saw as a kid in the store by bands like Molly Hatchet. Don't know if he was involved or not (I checked, he wasn't). Condolences to his friends & family.

I believe it was Frank Frazetta that did a lot of the Molly Hatchet album cover art.

I remember his work from "Den"... Somewhere in the attic I have boxes of old Heavy Metals (from my misspent youth), which contain the Den series.

Yep it was but then they started using others on later albums. I was pretty surprised they were from Jacksonville, FL, Don't laugh but I've actually never heard any of Molly Hatchet's and similar band's music. If I found their album covers scary, I wouldn't touch them. Here is more of what I think of when I hear a phrase like Molly hatch it.

    that's so sad.

i wrote corben a fan letter back in the late seventies, when i barely qualified as a teenager, and he sent me a thoughtful and very funny letter back.  i was amazed.

one of a kind.  an inspiration to so many artists, but impossible to imitate.  a brilliant artist and colorist who was also just flat-out a great storyteller.

i've seen a few of his originals.  amazing stuff.

i'm sorry to hear he's passed on.
