Why does Ulrike render time is so fast?

Hello guys, noob here. I recently purchased this girl https://www.daz3d.com/ulrike-hd-for-genesis-8-female and to my surprise, her render time is atleast 5 time faster than other girls.

At first I thought it was because of SSS ( sub-surface scattering) so I tried to change the translucent weight slider, from 0 to 1 and 1 to 0 back to back but it didnt matter, render time staying the same. (Btw why does the translucent weight slider make some figures turn black but has no effect on other?)

I checked her textures file and its all 4k, and when i tried nvidia iray preview in the view port it doesnt lag at all, unlike other products.( Like those clothes by HM, I know I have a shitty laptop but still his product lag like hell on my system)

What is this black magic guys?

Select her and then check under Parameters (tab) -> General -> Mesh Resolution if she maybe loads with the Render SubD Level (Minimum) too low (= lower than 4)

When setting that value to 4 probably the render times will then be as high as you're used to.. devil

I think its not about the mesh resolution because when I used her material on other figures their render time also got faster, much faster than before.

Something about those textures, something beyond my comprehension D :

  • compression?

I have actually discovered the trick of resaving some jpgs in MSpaint under a new name and getting them to render faster, some actually need it done to show up in Filament, jpg is a lossy format so it is reducing the quality but if only a copy not the original useful for things that are too heavy otherwise rather than reducing the dimensions.

I honestly have no idea, Iam quite a noob if you ask me, but one thing I know for sure is, Ulrike's textures or shading option is what make her render time so fast.

If you have her, go and try it out friend.

  • no I don't have her so can only guess

you could test this on a slow to render skin though making copies and loading them

It's likely lower resolution texture maps and lack of normal maps.

Just a guess here since I don't have that figure. I'm guessing that this figure doesn't use dual lobed specular for the skin. Dual lobed spec was introduced with Genesis 8, and is much slower to render than the way skin shaders were set up for Genesis 3.  Some vendors continued to use the older skin shader for quite a while (some may still use them).

Edit: As Vagans noted, the use of high resolution normal maps can slow things down too, so that may be a factor with this character (low resolution normal map, or no normal map).

Well, it looks like my guess is probably wrong! I just checked, and I have two characters from the same vendor. They both use the dual lobed specular shader, and are older products, so that may not be the reason for the difference. However looking at the promos, the skin doesn't appear to have the same SSS qualities of the characters I have, so that may be something to look into to figure out what the difference is.

Yeah, I think it's the lack of normal maps.

Nope, she has normal and bump maps. i find she renders in the same time as oither figures i have,

Really?  There are no normal maps listed on her product page.

yep she has normal map, all 4k

Also if you have a beast of a pc I dont think you would notice the different in render time FSMCDesigns.

Welp first world problem I guess

  • Did you just upgrade to Daz 4.14 from an older version?  I haven't combed through all the settings, but it seems like 4.14 renders faster.  Can't tell if it's optimizations and rendering faster, or in the compute deciding it's done.
