OK, I'm not the only one who gets Wonder Woman 1984 for free on HBO Max, on Christmas Day! But it's the best, and only, Christmas present I'll get this year!

Well I wish you Happy Christmas my friend :)
Thanks you, beachlegs! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Let us know what you think of it (I'm thinking of catching it in the cinema after Christmas (no HBO here))
And Merry Christmas :)
Three words: Save Your Money.
OK, but that's subjective - what's bad about it? Is it awkwardly paced? Cheesy lines? Poor acting? Same-old-stuff repackaged? Avengers:Endgame-re-release levels of CGI? Predictable "twist"? etc?
Watched it and would say that everyone with an interest in the subject should take the time to watch and come to their own opinion.
I thought it was well done, was true to the subject's history, without being too faithful. It avoided a lot of the obvious cliches and took a few of the ideas in new directions.
It wasn't a bombastic sort of movie, which might put some people off.
Saw it... sad to say I was a little disappointed. For context, I loooooved the first WW.
I thought the story was meandering and messy, the various storylines and themes never quite coming together in a coherent way. The overall message of the movie is oddly pro status quo which hits strangely during a time when so many are envisioning a better future. There is something in there about Truth winning over Cheating but the movie stumbles as it tries to make its point.
On a less abstract level I thought there were not enough action scenes. And the camera is oddly unflattering to Chris Pine - probably the biggest crime of them all.
Gal Gadot is still a lot of fun and it's not a horrible movie... just a marked step down from the first one which I thought was laser focused in its story and intent.
I felt like I was watching a dress rehearsal, in that there didn't seem to be a whole lot of effort put into the acting, but also that the dialogue was sort of action-movie boilerplate. I really liked the first Wonder Woman, but I stopped watching this after half an hour. I felt bad for the actors, and I don't watch movies to feel that kind of bad.
Or perhaps wise monetary advice based on financial uncertainties and a shaky economy... One used to be able to have a savings account or a high yield Certificate of Deposit and that would be good, but nowadays the interest on those are so low, one often needs find to other ways of saving money...
Here are a few suggestions on how to save your money.
- Clip coupons.
- Recycle your bottles and cans.
- Buy Generic brands.
- Purchase dead people's medications (only really works if it's the same as what you were prescribed).
- Eat every other day.
- Cancel automatic subscriptions you may have forgotten about (pineapple of the month club?).
- Reduce energy costs by building your own nuclear reactor.
- Learn to make your own clothing out of rat fur.
- Sell unnecessary organs or extra blood and or important body fluids.
- Give up store bought meat and try new alternative meat sources like pigeon and rat.
These are just a few ideas, there are probably many more, though most of them might not be legal... but now it's more important than ever to save your money.
I mostly want to watch Greenland. but VOD is 20 bucks, which is steep for one person. I can wait for a cheaper price for Wonderwoman.
I largely enjoyed the movie.
After the fact, someone pointed out the strange dearth of 80s music, which is a fair point. But, on the other hand, it's not something I really noticed watching the movie.
What I DID notice was the big fight between (two women) toward the end was all in shadowy dim lighting. On the one hand, that did allow some glowy stuff to show nicely, but it also largely made the action murky and hard to discern. And it's often a sign at trying to do a lot of CGI more easily/cheaply, because good cgi lighting is REALLY high level stuff. Any time you see a dimly lit cgi battle... they are trying to make their job easier.
But I loved the actors and the acting. Pedro Pascal was a sheer joy for me to watch.
I noticed the lack of 80s music as well. I did appreciate the "80s style" background music that was mixed in to some scenes.
Trying not to be too specific so no spoilers.
Good thing i never listen to what others think of movies, LOL There are many that I liked/loved that didn't do well or got poor reviews and vice versa. Take Thor Ragnarok for instance, freakin hated that one compared to the first two, but it was a huge success, mainly for the reasons I disliked it.
I love Gal as WW and liked the first one, so I plan of seeing this one, but it will have to wait since I don't have HBO max.
I'd be interested in HBO, because it would mean I'd be able to get around to actually watch 'Game Of Thrones', but from what I'm informed, unless you have Apple's streaming service, it's not available in the UK.
You can do trials of the major providers on amazon if you are a prime member. I signed up for just a month for HBO last year to complete all my GOT episodes. I'd sign up for HBO again if I saw that HBOmax was included or that I would get WW, but I am not seeing it so far.
If it's not available in the UK, you could try a VPN service
I thought the first Wonder Woman wasn't very good, but have some hopes for this.
I watched Wonder Woman 1984, and absolutely loved the entire movie. I have a free subscription to HBO Max because Comcast XFInity is my provider. The movie was a very bright part of my otherwise hellishly depressing "Holiday Season."
I will gladly buy the BluRay version when it is released.
A friend said something similar, that the plot is just a muddled mess and the lines are meh.
I liked the first one and really liked Gal Gadot in it, so I'll watch it anyways.
My first reaction when hearing the title was "Why have the story in 1984?!" I decided not to let that bother me.
I like Wonder Woman. I love to watch beautiful, smart women who can kick "posteriors!" Gal Gadot does a great portrayal of Wonder Woman. She suffered many injuries, including a broken back, for this role.I've seen Gal Gadot on Saturday Night Live, and other appearances on TV. She's a genuine woman who really cares about her job and people in general.
I didn't keep score on just how many 1980's references were in the movie. There were enough to remind me of things I'd forgotten (I was 34 years old in 1984.) I agree with those who didn't like all the dark scenes. In my opinion, far too many TV shows and movies spend far too much time in the dark. But I've learned just to roll with it.
There is one central theme to the movie. I don't want to post any spoilers. You should pick up the theme very quickly. Then keep that in mind as the story progresses.
As someone who grew up watching the Wonder Woman series, I loved the movie. There were elements that were just campy enough yet very modern. I liked the nod to series it gave at times. As a romance author, the romance between Diana and Steve and the way they brought him back hit a lot of my oooh buttons. I loved the references to the Monkey's Paw theme they had going on. I also loved the cameo with Linda Carter at the end. I just loved the movie in general. I also didn't think the acting was as bad as previous posters claimed.
Personally, I think it was worth the money I shelled out for a month of HBO Max just to watch it. And much to my suprise, I've found a few other things on HBO I wouldn't mind watching before my month runs out. So bonus. I might even watch WW84 again though. It's a lot more complex than one might think at first glance. They wove in a lot of subplots and references to Wonder Woman's established in the early comics.
I tried quoting this in my previous comment, but the editor in the forum did weird things, so I'm commenting separately. I was going to sign up for HBO Max via Amazon, but it was confusing and there were several reviews which seemed to indicate the HBO streaming doesn't work with the Amazon app so I ended up going directly with HBO on the HBO website instead. That seemed the safest route since I wanted to watch the movie.
Given the mix of reviews, this is probably one of those things that works for some people and not others. I loved the first WW movie and I think Gal Gadot does a great job (in that and BvS and Justice League). I also loved the old series with Linda Carter. The biggest gripe I've heard about the new movie is that the tone is all over the place (unlike the first one).
I think I can trade in some loyalty points (even though it's been ages since I went to the cinema) and get a cinema ticket for AU$9 (Covid thankfully not a big problem here and the theater is usually quite empty at the times I go). So I'll probably check it out anyway.
Before COVID, I almost always sat in an empty theater to watch a movie. That is the advantage of going during the afternoon. I'm a big super hero fan. Even though I gave up buying comics in the 1980s, I'm still a fan. I will at the very least buy every superhero movie when it comes out on BluRay.
my son, who is a relentless watcher of movies, and has pretty good insight, thought it was too cheesy but made to look that way and ruined the overall movie. I didn;t even think it looked good in the trailers, but I'm not one to watch very many comic based movies anyway.
