HD Add-On: Yay or Nay?

First off, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

With this great Christmas sale going on, I thought I'd purchase some of the HD Add-Ons.  I rarely...if never...use the DAZ original characters "straight out of the box".  I love to mix and match various morphs to create a unique character.  However, since I got a new computer early this year, I wanted to make my photos look more high def.

If I make a character with 40% Darius, 20% Leroy, and 50% Silas, would those same HD add-on settings really do anything to the character or would the mixture just make it look a little bizarre?

Thanks for all the feedback in advance.

  • In my experience mixing HD add-ons will not help. I would use one of them at 100 % and use the normal maps of the skin you are going to use.

You can mix and match the regular morphs, but the HD morphs are for full body only and need to be applied at full strength to make a difference. Keep in mind that you also need to increase the mesh resolution to get the most out of any HD morph.

  • Just like mixing characters can give a range of results from wonderful to terrible, mixing HD morphs can vary quite a bit also. Keep in mind you are basically adding folds and wrinkles in the mesh. By doubling or tripling HD morphs, if it even works, you will likely get an extremely old looking character.  Just having a couple of the better HD morphs for each gender in each generation you use can enhance your renders tremendously.

[ As a side note: when you use a HD morph, you can change skin shaders and keep the wrinkles even if that shader drops the various maps that produce a similar effect - the low definition characters will just get smooth plastic-like skin when it loses the maps - unless you go through the trouble of manually adding them back in. ]

I usually use the HD morphs at 100% of the character of the SKIN texture I'm using.

  • I like to mix in the morphs, including the HD morphs. For example, I might have a 25% X, a 50% Y, and a 25% Z and I will dump in 100% of the 50% characters HD morph and I can use that skin, or another one.  It all depends on what works. But I like the HD morphs for mixing in. I might even mix in one HD morph on a character that has nothing to do with that one. Some work well, some don't work at all but it depends. Most of the Daz ones are split so you can get really strong body and a lighter head HD morph or whatever.

  • You never know what you'll get. Best bet is to set the preview to subdivision 3-4 and go viewer to smooth shaded and just see what happens. It's impossible to predict. Some place nice, others don't. When they go wrong though, they can go very wrong, so be careful!
