what is a 'default SSS' mat?

Very noobie question but when you have a character I find you have the selection of the regular standard default mat and the 'default SSS' mat. What is a SSS mat and what is the difference between them?

The default mat is probably the 3Delight default shader that does not have SSS (SubSurface Scattering). The other alternative is most likely the AoA SSS shader which is also a 3Delight shader with more advanced options, including Subsurface scattering. It could also be the OmUberSurface shader that also has SSS but it works a bit differently.

You mean SSS? It is a way of simulating the way light is absorbed and scattered when hitting a surface.

    SubSurface Scattering = SSS

There are settings in the surfaces tab to increase or decrease the effect.
