Either I'm not using the correct search terms or my search-fu is totally fubar'd. I know this has been asked in the past, and I can't for the life of me recall how or even if it can be done....

Can Genesis skin textures be used on Genesis 2? Do I need anything special to do it?

If they use the V5 or M5 UVset they can be used without anything else; other wise there are products to add various UVsets to G2 (or you can use Map Transfer to convert them to V5/M5).

thanks Mike! I think the Genesis skin I'm looking at uses the V4 uvset.

I'll search for a tut for this mysterious Map Transfer thingy. :D

I missed reading the bit about products that will add different UV sets to G2 - would you mind telling me what they are in teh store? So I can check them out? :D

I have that. And I've never been able to work out how to use it.

Old V4 materials can't be directly applied to Genesis 2 because the surfaces are made a little differently. However, you can do one of two things:

    1. Apply the material preset to V4 first and then save the materials as a DUF materials preset (File -> Save As -> Materials Preset). You can then use the new DUF file (which will likely show up under 'unassigned' in Smart Content) and apply it to G2F.

    2. Apply the material preset to Genesis first and then repeat the above, saving the materials out as a DUF.

Using V4 has the best results, since it retains the EyeReflection material, but both should work. Once it's been applied, you can select Victoria 4 from the UV dropdown box in the Surfaces -> Editor pane.

Genesis2 figures can use mats without them being in duf. The surface zone names just need to be changed in the files.

Use this script on V4/M4 mats. http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=dazscript&product=gen4g2mat
You can bulk convert an entire folder without having to load them onto the figure first. Daz and Poser scripts included.
It creates copies that have been ran through the script, prepended with G2_. You'll need to copy the torso material to the ears, since Gen4 didn't have a separate ear surface.

You do need the Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female product, sold here, for the UV.

I've been using it to get Maddelirium's girls onto G2F in Poser, and because I can bypass using DS to do this, I retain any custom Poser nodes.

Vaskania, thank you! Very interesting! It's a bit quicker than loading the mat onto V4 and saving as a material preset (yeah yeah I know, that doens't really take long at all.......but the script will do it SEPARATELY for the face makeups etc also, instead of having to save JUST the face/head/lips/blah blah each time. )

I might spend some time today going through some of my V4's and doing it via the script - most of my V4's are not near the quality of my Gen2 skins, but I'm lacking the really cool fantasy type makeups for my Gen2 and I miss them! LOL Now, all I need is a script that will make the skin settings PERFECT for Gen2 in dS. LOL

Another alternative is to use the BlackFeather1973 script, which basically renames the surfaces of Genesis 2 to match Genesis/V4 and so you can apply an older Genesis material preset on e.g. G2F. Again, the ears have to be copied over from e.g. the torso and remember that the internal DAZ Studio copy function does not copy over a surface shader, but just the settings.

Genesis1 surfaces for Genesis 2 Female, and vice versa (UPDATED)
