why do characters show up in the main face box but not on the list on the left?

in The Commons
I think this is regardless of what genesis character model you are using but sometimes I want to add a texture from a character onto another already in the scene WITHOUT adding the characters morphs. I look for the name which is usually under 'people/genesis 8 female/characters' I see the characters name on the right in the box full of the character faces with their names under but her name on the left list is nowhere to be found. This is a problem as I want to use a texture from a G8F character and by selecting her from the face image box would mean loading in the whole figure.
What can I do?

So, in the Content Library, you're in People/Genesis 8 Female/Characters. Clicking on the character icon loads characters. If you want to load just the material, you have to navigate to the character in the tree, and then it all depends on how the PA has set up their content. Some Characters, along with their materials, etc are in folders under the character name, and some are by character in a folder named for the PA. Some PAs do it one way for some characters and a different way for other characters.
Like here, you'll find 3DUniverse's characters in the 3DUniverse folder, but you'll find Ada and Adda by themselves off the main Character branch. And you'll find the materials for each character in the character's folder. Most of the time, if the PA didn't screw up. Which happens, too. Smart Content is screwed up sometimes, but the Content Library is kind of a free-for-all. You can also type the character name in the search box up top, and, depending on the size of your library, what you're looking for will turn up in the search results sooner or later. Probably.
Smart Content does not have Actors selected when you click on any of them, only opens a submenu and you select either actor or materials
The contrary case in Content Panel you're right, selecting one loads an actor and searching on their folders is very tricky if you don't know who PA made such character.
Suggestions?, do a video selection of your textures, or a catalogue, for me is a must, i have a ton of characters.
if your Daz Style is still black and doesn't know how to modify maybe this video can help you too.
@Zilvergrafix ...I would like to know how you get the blue NEW to show in your Content Library ?
I don't get that anymore on new installed items and having since many versions ago of DS, I thought that didn't work anymore
I always do a Content Database Maintenance and select the options below:
Thank you so much for that tip, I didn't even notice those boxes were there!
Thankyou for all this feedback.
If you use a Daz installation method then Edit>Preferences>Content tab and check Assign New Products to "New" Group.
I have always had that box checked in content tab and I use DIM to install but I never have the blue NEW on newly installed products until I tried what Zilvergrafix said to do
