G8F 8.1 library folder chaos

OK, so due to the lack of QA the library folders get more and more chaotic like for example the Genesis 8 Female Folder:
- I have a 4blueyes-folder because some products from that vendor installed there
- I have an Accesories (with just on "s") folder because the Alternative Piercing Pack for G8F installed there
- I have a Descant G8F folder because that product installed there and not under clothing
- I have a Dotify folder there because that product installed there and not under Materials
- I have a Hairs (with the "s") folder because Nirv Sweet Pie Hair installed there
- I have a Material (without the "s") folder because the Ultra Bright Makeup intalled there
- I have not needed Separate Items and Smart Props folder because the Party and Dance Poses installed them

But Genesis 8.1 does top this easily:

- Genesis 8.1 Basic Female installed to the Genesis 8 Female folder
- In addition to the Expressions-Folder there is now an Expressions 8_1 folder under Genesis 8 Female
- The Genesis 8 Female Genitalia, the 8.1 Tear, Vellus Hair and Genesis 8.1 Male Genitalia for Female are all placed in the Anatomy folder of G8F
- Vicky 8.1 can be found in the characters folder of G8F
- But there is also a new Genesis 8.1 Female Folder which contains new Accessories, Animations, Hair and Poses subfolders from some vendors

So what are the thoughts behind this? Is 8.1 stuff working with 8 supposed to go to G8F folders whereas stuff working only with 8.1 shall go to the G8.1F folders? Or is it all just random?

All my G8.1 F content is inside the Genesis MALE Powepose Template folder...

  • You can open a ticket for the folder names. They have actually fixed a few in the past when I've opened tickets before. Sometimes they also ignored it and closed it saying it doesn't matter if the spelling is wrong as long as the product loads they don't care, so who knows, it depends on the person reading the ticket.

We have been explicitly told that they won't fix a product for pathing/folder errors if that's the only issue. In general, the policy seems to be that they fix pathing errors only when they fix other things wrong with a product.

That said, this is a pretty big pathing error, so maybe they'll fix it. You rolls your dice, you takes your chances ... or not.

THAT Said, I'm glad this thread appeared. There were some things I couldn't find, because it never occurred to me that they'd be in with the G8F stuff when G8F can't actually use them.

My solution is to use Content Library > Products > (1-Z). I avoid the maze of folders, and over the years I've been forced to go seeking elsewhere less than ten times. Daz is consistently inconsistent, and they've given us no reason to expect that they'll change.

I nearly never leave the content folders as-is anyway. I tend to like to keep things in some form of general order that keeps the top-level list from getting out of hand. People > Figure/Generation (G/2/3/8 or Generation 2/3/4 from way back), then separate by male and female, with all the other categories for each below that. 8.1 would wind up under Genesis 8, separated by M/F, etc.

Mass content install day can be a bit of a pain, but it avoids some of the major problems. I do the same for most of the other folders, which means I can just pack up those folders and transplant at need.

It would help if stuff isn't installed at random, though.

I only have base G8.1F installed and I rather it be with the G8F stuff than its own folder. The worst one, for me, was that Frankenstein's Monster Bride PC+ character set. The maps are stored in Material rather than Materials, in the Runtime.

  • Well I try to navigate mainly with Smart Content nowadays but unfortunately quite often there's kind of chaos within a product, especially once it is for two genereations like poses, clothing or characters covering G3 and G8. Often you just see most icons twice and and if you get the right one it's a hit and miss.

Guess I will rather edit the DIM package than contacting customer service if only the people file-structure is affected. Time needed might be the same and unless there is an update which does reset my changes I can at least customize exactly where things are stored. For example I always edit texture packages from 3rd party vendors to be right within the main product folder. Only things I might get in touch with customer service is once things within the runtime/texture folder get too messy. But as said this would be just a little QA step: Installing and checking the folder structure. Don't know why this is not possible.

Mine is the same.  It was in the Genesis 8 Starter Essentials initially.  I was installing the V8.1 and some other files and I had paused installs and didn't finish the Genesis 8 Male Powerpose templates - because I didn't feel I needed it.  When I came back to try V8.1 I couldn't find the Base G8 files and I no longer have a package "Genesis 8 StarterEssentials".  It's not in my installed nor in my available to install listing.

So in desperation I let the "Male Powerpose template" finish and there it was - it was all in there.

It's annoying but I use a shortcut to it in my main bar so not a big deal.

That said the shortcut always says I can choose from 2 installs of it.  If I select the one in the "data/cloud" location she loads without textures, if I load from the base connect folder option instead she loads with textures.

This is exactly why I manually install everything and won't use DIM or any other software to do it for me. I can then rename and reorder everything that isn't in the data or runtime folders to my own wishes. Not only does it stop simple spelling errors creating new folders, it means that any add-on content (textures etc) goes into the same folder as the base content. Does it take a bit of effort and time? Yes. Is it worth it IMO? Absolutely.

Yep, that's where I found mine hidden as well, there is no longer any Genesis 8 Starter Essentials showing in my smart content.

I am mildly OCD when it comes to organizing information and the chaos in the DAZ library drives me crazy. It's inconsistent every way possible, and half of my life is spent digging through my (admittedly over-large) library looking for stuff. When I am the Benevolent Dictator of the World, my Kindly Stormtroopers of Peace and Harmony will descend on the DAZ offices and politely invite them to fix it all.

I realize it's a lot to ask but because I will be a well-intentioned and benevolent dictator, I won't even mention all the other things I'd like to see fixed. Not at first, anyway.

I install content via DAZ Connect the Genesis 8 Essentials (male and female) installed as one product named "Genesis 8 Male Powerpose Templates". The product name doesn't bother me, although it should have been named Genesis 8 Starter Essentials.  I checked DIM and there are 5 separate installers so I would expect installs via DIM are not affected.

DAZ Connect does not touch the DAZ Studio Formats Library which allows me to populate the DAZ Studio Formats Library with shortcuts dragged from the Smart Content pane. I've decided to populate Genesis 8.1 specific content into separate Genesis 8.1 Female and Genesis 8.1 Male folders with the typical sub-folders.

I'll join the amen chorus here.

This is a particular pet peeve of mine.  Ughhh....

When I am traversing my Content Library, and have to scroll past several Environment, Envrment, Environments or Environmonts because PAs/QA dropped the spelling ball or can't follow convention, I get a frustration train going that is hard to get off of.

About a year ago, somebody mentioned to me about the PRODUCTS library Local User file and I had a freak out moment that lead me to re-install Daz to try to get a handle on things... and Ironically, I don't really use the Smart Content at all so maybe it was a pointless endevor.

For work flow, I use the Content Library and Custom Categories, but my OCD about file organization has me spending more time organizing content than actually making art which is starting to bum me out.

DIM installs are equally affected. It is NOT the install files, it is the DAZ metadata update that messes things up. If the files are installed via DIM, and Studio is started WITHOUT logging in, the files are all where they are supposed to be. Once you go online, the metadata update kicks in and messes up SmartContent.

As I do use quite some scripted tools, I don't go with DAZ Connect. Almost none of the scripted tools packages do work at all or at least to some extent with DAZ Connect.

  •  Errors involving misspelled file names, non-standard file locations, incorrect metadata, and incorrect Smart Content categorization are showing up far too often.  Forget fully testing each product before its release--I know that's too much to hope for.  Checking (not correcting) standard file structure, spelling of file names, Smart Content categorization, and metadata for 8-10 new items per day wouldn't require a huge staff of full-timers.  How long does it take the buyer to notice the problems upon installation?  The number of errors we're seeing represents some degree of indifference to QC and a desire to rush content to market.

Almost all of my recent content purchases have been from the Daz store because so much of what's available from third-party sites is a pain to install, or unnecessarily difficult to use in Daz Studio, or both. If we can't count on Daz to hold PAs to meaningful standards, and to uphold those standards for items developed by Daz itself, why shouldn't the Daz Studio user take their chances and buy more of their content from third-party sites?

I put in a ticket for this one with a screenshot because it was the same in Daz Connect. I didn't know if it was the same with DIM or not. It doesn't even look like there are any powerpose templates there. It's all the Genesis 8 Starter Essentials so I think someone mislabeled something. Not sure if there is supposed to be any Powerpose Templates, but if there are, they aren't in that package.

As far as I have understood, PA:s have nothing to do with Metadata, that's done by DAZ.

  • "As far as I have understood, PA:s have nothing to do with Metadata, that's done by DAZ."

Okay, but metadata problems generated by Daz itself are just as bad, or maybe worse, than if the PAs make the mistakes and Daz either fails to notice and correct them, or just doesn't care about them.  The central point is that the end user gets a product with problems that should have been detected with minor QC efforts, and those problems should be corrected for the item goes on sale.
