Can IK Chain Be To Used To Maintain Hand Contact On A Prop As The Character Walks?

Trying to get 2 girls carrying a canoe to their SUV.  I created a null and attached it to the canoe where the girl is holding it and IK Chain linked it to her right hand, but each time she takes a step, her hand breaks contact.  It's like it's not even there, but if I manually move the canoe, the stays on fine.  In the image, I angled it so only one hand is visible but it's getting to the point where I'll just show them walking away from the camera so zero hands are showing.

Can I assume that IK Chains are aren't meant for body parts that are swinging as the character walks?

So there is an IK target parented to the null?

Yes.  I'm wondering if I need to convert the canoe to a figure.

The DS IK pins are not immovable objects - at the moment if soemthing has to give it's the pin that does so. I'm not good enough using IK in any application to say that this happens too readily, but it is certainly very easy to dislodge the pinning. I don't thinkl it really matters whether the target is parented to a prop or a figure.

It sounds to me that one of mCasuals' many free animation helper scripts may accomplish what you're trying to do.  Have you checked out mcjAutoLimb or mcjAutoparent ?

if you render your animation in image series  instead of movie you do not need the ik chain at all.

render your image series up to the point you need to make a change where you need to parent or unparent the prop which ever the case maybe. , then stop the render at that keyframe,   parent or unparent the hand to the prop or make the changes needed manually and then resume rendering.  when you place all the images in the flim editor to make the MP4  the animation it will look seemless & hands stay in place
