Did you take a look at my render on my site? Everybody posts renders here, I almost never do any lately, so I wanted people to see it. I don't like putting my stuff up too many places, though.

I have placed my most recent render onto the home page of my website. It is an image I created for greeting cards for my wife and mom and two sisters. I decided to put it up there. If anyone is interested and doesn't know my site's address I'll post it.

I spent three days on it, there's a lot in it and I was surprised at how fast DS rendered it at 1800 x 1125 pixels! Just under four minutes. Of course, I'm not using Reality...then it would have probably been just under four days!

    Dana

    linky ?

    my site

The image there isn't 1800 x 1125, it was so big that I thought some folks might have trouble with it. Even as a jpg. So I sized it down. It's about the actual size on the greeting cards, though.

Thanks. That's Flink's Winter Trees, from Renderosity, and Flink's Winter Bushes, and Flink's Conifer 2, and Flink's Snow Ground. Did you notice Ken's Snowy Owl in the tree at right? And Lynn's Red Fox center left?

Posing the people was tough. But I like doing my own posing. The Sensibility Coat from the expansion pack didn't pose easily, either. And I don't know why the Elite texture on M4 came out so dark.

    ..yes I did (the critters).

For snow effects I only have the Let it Snow Shader Used it in the scene below .

    http://kyotokid.deviantart.com/art/A-Time-Of-Hope-425931017

Also recently picked up Ron's Magical Snow brushes.

As to the Elite M4 texture, what lighting did you use?

I never picked up those textures (or the HSS and UberSurface ones) myself as when they came out, I was still working on the 32 bit system, and they only increased the chance of a render crash for me.

    Very nice!

I used one Advanced Distant Light in the scene.

...maybe a low intensity Ambient light might help a bit.

If you have set the distant light to a blue colour (for simulating moonlight) it will affect the colours of everything in the scene. It could be that doing so is having an unwanted effect on the skin's specular channel (again, I do not have any Elite textures so I'm just guessing here). Try using the low intensity Ambient light to cast a slight bluish quality and then adjust the Distant light's colour to a very very light blue (almost white) and see if that helps.

If it is that his face is in shadow, you could also use a low intensity Advanced Spotlight (set as a point light) flagged to just illuminate his skin to lighten it a bit. Place it in front of the character, set the spread to 360° and the internal angle to 100% and falloff to custom making sure M4 is within that range. I do that a lot to add a bit of fill light on faces when there's too much shadow on it..

Don't have Advanced Spotlight. Distant light was not set to blue at all. I tried that and it got too blue. I don't know if that snow stuff is just that way, or if I'm just a dumbass and don't know how to do something. The odd thing is that the driver has the standard M4 that comes when you load him, and that looks better. So, I don't know what makes that other skin "Elite". Maybe it was just the price. :smirk: Anyway, it is what it is, now.

@Dana: Love the card. I've never even seen a horse and sleigh but this makes me want to ride in one. I don't think we ever have enough snow here in Austin though. Maybe I should go visit TroutFace for pizza and we could go for a ride up there. I would even wear my wig. lol

Although I got my flu shot, I caught the flu. Seems like the strain that everyone is getting wasn't covered by the shot this year. I was down with high fever for 12 days and am not completely over it yet. Take care, y'all.

...night scenes are very tricky. to light properly. Even though I had experience in RL with theatrical lighting I had to relearn lot of things coming into this.

If I am not correct, the basic concept behind the Elite Textures was to give the Gen4 characters a more "realistic/photographic" look. before the advent of HSS, and now, SSS. Considering your scene is a "long shot" in photo terms, the advantages of the extra detail are pretty much lost and may even be "muddying" things up.

For the snow, it actually looks OK for a night scene. I just wondered about the light as blue tends to dull skin tones.

In the scene I provided the link to, the Advanced Ambient light I used provides most of the illumination for the building's in the background and the skydome (from Skies of Economy) I used three Advanced spots as point lights to create the surrounding glow.

Since I got the Advanced Spotlight, I rarely use the standard Daz spotlight or Point light anymore. The big plus is the ability to flag surfaces and it has different falloff settings including inverse square. Not a bad investment.

Actually HSS was invented (or rather sliced out of UberSurface) for the Elite textures (it was originally called Elite Human Surface Shader). What made the Elite skins elite was that they were made from dedicated photoshoots using a super large format camera.

What type of camera? Are you talking about a Hasselblad? That's a medium format camera. Large format is a view camera, using sheet film at 4" x 5" or upwards. Difficult to use those with human subjects unless you pour on a whole lot of light. I suppose studio strobes would do the job, though. Not many use them for human subjects, though. I do know, however, that Playboy used to use one for the centerfolds. I know the silver skins were shot with a Hasselblad, I remember seeing info on them. It may not have been mentioned by name, but there was a behind the scenes shot that showed one, they're quite obvious when you know what they are. I used one when I did wedding and model photography...in fact I used it for scenic photography, too. I used to use my Canon A1, but one time I used both with comparable lenses. I shot Attitash Mountain from White's Cliff. When I blew them both up in the darkroom, it was amazing how much more detail you could see in the medium format images. After that I used the Hassie exclusively for my scenics.
