Hello everyone! Decided t take today off and work Friday instead. Will still get plenty of hurs for bills.

I have spent the ENTIRE WEEKEND watching Mythbusters! :cheese: What a cool show, stream it straight from Discovery. Sip coffee, nibble cheese, watch rocket cars and shower-curtain parachutes!

I should work on some music later today.. but lots of naps will occur as well. Catch up on my sleep!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! :)

I just watched an episode of Mythbusters yesterday. They tried to prove the urban myth that if you leave your Christmas lights on the tree turned overnight you'll start a fire. Nope. Busted. At the end of the trials, they put 2,500 old fashioned big bulbs on a tree that that put in a kiln to dry...the thing was one big tinder...and it still didn't catch fire. Finally (because they like explosions and fires) they used a sparker to set it on fire. So, Christmas tree fires are started by short circuits due to faulty wiring or too many strings on the circuit which causes a short...or even by some dumb bunny putting actual candles on the branches and lighting them! But not from the heat of the bulbs.

    Dana

Interesting! Will have to chase that episode down!

The other myth in the episode was anti-gravity devices, to help you narrow it down.

    Dana

Cool, thanks! Watching one episode now while I sip soup! :)

Things went our way today but yes please, can never have too much rain I guess :)

I see they are trying not to issue spoilers for Citizen Kane.

    huh?

I gather you have never seen the film "Citizen Kane"
I've seen it several times, and I don't get Richard's comment either. Must be a UK thing. :)

oh dear, no not really a UK thing. The quip is dying a death, as was the the Magnate when he said .................

OK, the glossed version - at the beginning of the film, as Kane is dying, he whispers "Rosebud" and no one knows what it means. The film then covers his life, and only at the end do we find out what Rosebud referred to. So the question mark over Rosebud West is the map maker trying not to spoil the ending of Citizen Kane. Sorry.

Is citizen Kane the old movie where they try to decipher what an old guy's last word meant? Saw it in a movie class long time ago.

OK, at the time I read your comment, Richard, the post no longer had any physical connection to the map. :)
Therefore I took your comment at face value, which made it a "non sequitur" . :red:

i'm having trouble finding ram upgrade for my desktop

...been shopping around myself but the only two 24GB kits (6 x 4GB) I can find that are compatible with my MB are a GSkill and Corsair one, both which have these odd protrusions on the top of the sticks. The memory sticks I currently have (Corsair) don't look like that at all.

I've been told that due to availability, RAM for older computers is actually more expensive than that for new computers.

    Dana
...the two 24GB kits pictued in my post above go for 249$ and 279$ respectively at Newegg. When I purchased the 12GB kit for my system several years ago, it cost me 389$.

Hard to find 4 x 6GB kits anymore everything is now 3 x 8GB but my board will not support 8GB sticks. Will not even consider "used" memory.

    the ram i have says pc3-10600u-999 4gb 2rx8
    u means something?

    azo, think it means unregistered.

    missing the 30-pin days

What's to register? I can't help you there. I hate hardware. There are so many different varieties of RAM that have very similar numbers that you have to be absolutely certain. I bring my computer to a shop for things like that. I ordered RAM online once, and had to return it because it was the wrong one. I called them and the guy helped me get the right one ordered, but wow, confusing!

    Dana

...the GSkill kit actually makes note that it is compatible with my MB's X58 chipset. At least it doesn't look quite as "weird" as the Corsair one which in the description mentions

Aluminum heat spreaders help dissipate heat effectively while providing an aggressive appearance for your gaming rig. (emphasis mine)

    ....Right,

"Hey, I got scary looking memory sticks, y'all better watch out, for my rig is one bad a** render beast now that will eat yours for brekkie!!!!" ;-)

I've got 8 heat spreaders on mine. I have 8 4GB sticks. I wanna get it down to 4 8GB sticks so I can just upgrade one at a time instead of having to replace all at once

I suspect that those are sort of like heat sinks, or maybe exactly like heat sinks. I believe that higher end RAM has things like that, to dissipate the heat and keep the RAM running cooler without a meltdown. Must be tough to push it into the sockets with those thingies, though.

You're welcome! I watch an episode every now and then...those guys are crazy! They love to blow things up. I saw one a couple of years ago where they tested the theory of escaping gunshots by diving under water. I think it was proven. One time they tested the theory of surviving a plane crash if you do what they tell you to get into position. I think they proved that one, too. I can't remember for sure. I wouldn't want to put it to the test, though. :gulp:

...I could probably go with 3 x 8GB but that would leave 3 slots permanently empty as my board only supports 24GB. I would also need to be sure that they are compatible with the x58 chipset.

The downside is I would have to upgrade my OS as Win7 Premium only supports 16GB. MS ceased selling Win7 "Anytime Upgrade" keys last year so I would either have to find one on a third party site (Amazon has one but it;'s almost 400$!!!!!) or do a full clean install of the full version which would mean having to back everything up and then rebuilding my setup all over again. Not looking forward to having to deal with all that.

...that was exactly my thought as it takes a little force to make sure they are firmly seated in the slots. Not much into having pierced fingers.
