Gen 4 Figures not Working

Okay, I have been fighting with this for half the night and I have just about given up...
Windows 7, DS 4.7.
Every time I try to add a Generation 4 figure, nothing appears. The behavior is the same with V4, K4, A4, M4, F4...
Exact sequence of events:
1. Double click the icon in the Content Library.
2. Status window pops up. Initializing, initializing, initializing.
3. Status window closes, Power Loader window appears. Leave as is, hit Accept.
4. Status window pops up. Generating, generating, generating.
5. Status window closes.
Nothing. No figure appears. Nothing in the Scene tab. Just nothing.
Checked the error log, nothing. The log ends with "Script executed successfully."
No on screen error messages. It doesn't matter if everything is selected or deselected in the Power Loader.
I've uninstalled V4, V4 Morphs, Genesis, G2F, G2M, and reinstalled. (Removed the Genesis entries because of (I assume) unrelated errors with the Growing Up mod. Which I also uninstalled since those errors never seem to go away.)
I don't know when this started since this is the first time I have been back to Gen 4 in a couple of months.

And now if I try to add Gen 3 figures I get "No importer for this file format can be found." WTF?
How did you install them? Try manually initializing them with DS closed.
Library > Runtime > Libraries > !DAZ > run the appropriate DzCreateExPFiles.bat files (M4 for M4, V4 for V4, etc).
I used DIM but I will try your suggestion right now.
Thanks, but no luck. Exact same results.
Next ideas, is everything installed together? V4 figure needs to be in the same runtime as V4 morphs, etc. Same with M4 with his morphs and such. Also, do you have them installed in C:\Program Files? If you do, get them out. lol
Everything is installed together.
DS is on one drive (not C). All my content is on another drive (also not C).
Everything Genesis and later is in a "Genesis" directory. Everything pre-Genesis is in a "Pre-Genesis" directory.
I was going to say that none of my other content is having problems, but it seems like everything "Poser Formats" in the Content Library is throwing "No importer" errors, all of a sudden. The same item under DAZ Studio Format has no issues.
Hm. I've only seen that error in reference to loading 4.5+ duf files in 4.0. I haven't a clue what it means in your case. Sorry. =/
/edit
Have you tried reinstalling Daz Studio itself? I'm wondering if there's a Poser format importer that somehow became corrupted?
I will try that now. At this point I don't see what harm it can do. Since everything seems to be fugazied anyway.
lol Crossing my fingers for ya.
Thanks. In the process now. And thanks for the assistance. I've been pulling out my hair since 3AM (and its 5 now, so I am starting to run out of hair).
When I said it couldn't get worse, I spoke too soon.
Uninstalled using DIM. Redownloaded. The install process takes less than a millisecond (first clue that there is a problem). But it doesn't install. It shows up in the Installed tab with a file size of "?"
I am restraining myself from not letting loose a stream of obscenities.
I..
uhh...
*blink*
I got nothing. I honestly have no idea what would be causing that.
What about DIM being corrupted? Seems to be the one thread running consistently through your issues. You could try getting to your product library and downloading Studio from there, don't forget to register it afterwards! And after that, then download by hand standard V4 and install. See if that does the trick.
I can't check Gen4 figures with the latest studio right now because I am on my older non-work computer, but I'll check for you in a while and let you know whether they work or not.
Actually, I've just updated DIM without a hitch. Update might not be the same process as redownload, but rules out a server malfunction.
Possible that either the server on this end is not working right, or also possible that some antivirus decided it didn't like DIM as it tries to run other executables... one update data set for the antivirus with the wrong commands (usually done automatically) and something like this could happen.
Apparently DIM was being dim.
I went and checked my install directory and DS was still there. The only thing DIM uninstalled was the icons and links.
I rebooted, renamed my old DS application directory, then started DIM up and installed. This time the install actually went through the process.
I then copied my old shaders and plug in directories into the new DS directory, without over writing any existing files.
DS is working again, but back to square one. Same V4 not loading and no import format available errors.
I did open a support ticket, but I wanted to see if there was a resolution I could attempt in the meantime. Just so that I could make being up all night seem worth while when I am feeling the pain in a few hours.
My suspicion is either the recent DS update or the V4 Auto Skins Converter, since those are the only major changes I have had in the past month. Most of the time I design my scenes on another computer, then transfer the files to this computer (the one with the issues). So I haven't been in the Content Library for a few weeks.
Thanks Arien. I was thinking the same thing, which was why I went digging into the application directory.
It seems like DIM would only uninstall the items that were newly installed with the last update (icon, links) and didn't touch any of the files that had been updated.
Oh, and I am suspecting the Auto Converter because I attempted to use that to convert a bunch of V4 skins and failed miserably. Some sort of memory leak was causing DS to lock up after a handful of files converted. Now I am starting to wonder if that was just a symptom of something else it was doing.
Possible that something else was going on all along. I've had my fair share of issues with Studio, it's been notoriously fickle on any machine I've ever owned or attempted to use.
On that note, Victoria 4.2 base loaded without a hitch, and did even bring up powerloader with all her "friends" installed. HOWEVER... I had to go into DIM to check the installation directories because I couldn't find anything in Studio's own Library, even though I distinctly remember having a Studio figure at some point. It looks like the newer versions that DIM installed are putting V4 and everything else within the Studio's own library but the .cr2/ds file itself within Poser's own Runtime within the Studio Library (if that makes sense).
Possible scenario for you: you had the older install, tried to run the old Vicky from within DS's library; newer DS is expecting a different set of commands. DS decides that it's had enough and throws a hissy fit.
Or, translated: you had legacy installation and newer DS is not happy with it, cue chaos and mayhem.
I *did* install DS 4.5 and all the figures from scratch in here not that long ago, and made a point of having Vicky reinstalled within the base library. I know it's a PITA, but I would suggest that after reinstalling latest DS, you also save your library (or your V4 library) separately, and add V4 newly to the recommended library, and try again, see if that does the trick now.
You can add more libraries to DIM. Upper right corner > cogwheel > installation tab iirc. I have Generation 4 figures in their own runtime, and it's the folder containing \runtime that I have mapped in DS.
I know you *can* do it, I actually have about half a dozen extra libraries set up on a NAS server, so that isn't the issue, but these sort of issues were popping up all over the map when 4.2 was released, and always the first course of action was to delete every single item from previous installs and reinstall in the default library, because sometimes these extra files were causing trouble. Might not be the case here, but I'm willing to bet this is the first thing Support will tell him to do.
Did you try reinstalling DS without any plugins and no copying of old plugins either?
After some sleep, I decided to try on my other computer to watch the behavior.
I noticed that after that after the "Generating" status window disappears another status window comes up.
In fact, this is the series of windows: Initializing, PowerLoader interface, Generating, Importing/Reading, Recording, Copying, Retrieving, Reading. Along the process the V4 figure appears, right after the Importing/Reading.
On the other computer the chain breaks at Generating and goes no further. Which leads me to believe it is connected to the same "No import format" error that suddenly starting happening.
(And I mentioned the Skin Auto Converter because the same memory leak issue happened on two different computers, I also noticed that other people were reporting the same behavior. But now I am inclined to believe this is not related to that product.)
Are other items in Poser format loading?
No, nothing under "Poser Formats" will load. I either get no response when icons are clicked, or "No import format" or the behavior described above with V4.
Also, am I right in my observation that there is something broke when you use DIM to uninstall an installation of DS that has had an update applied?
If you isntalled DS manually I would uninstall it before using DIM, but DIM should work to update DIM installs. It does sound as if something has happened to the PZ3 import plug-in, which is part of the base installation.
I installed DS through DIM. I did a clean install about two - three months ago. Followed by the 4.7 update a couple of weeks ago.
When I uninstalled through DIM the Desktop icon and start menu link disappeared. I then used DIM to redownload (101mb) and reinstall. Reinstall completed in a millisecond, which was the first clue of a problem. Second clue was DIM showing DS as the first thing I installed (meaning it had no date) and an install size of "?".
When I checked the application directory, DS was still fully populated with the old install.
I rebooted, renamed the application directory, then had DIM install DS. That was when the installation proceeded properly. All of which tells me that uninstalling DS through DIM is not possible when an update has been applied through DIM. DIM seemed to only recognize the new files from the update rather than all of the files.
However that did not resolve the problem. Even with a relatively clean base installation, I still received the exact same errors.
I should also add that in retrospect I realized I had the same DIM DS uninstall / install problem with my other computer.
At that time I did not recognize what the issue was and just blew the DS directory away. I then reinstalled DS and all plug ins from scratch using DIM.
However that computer did not (and currently does not) have any issue with Poser format files.
Waited three and a half days for support to get back to me and got impatient with all the downtime.
Uninstalled everything. Now running into a new issue...
How do I get DIM to install DAZ Studio to the directory I want? No matter what I do, it insists on installing at "C:
Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4" even though I keep pointing DIM at "F:\DAZStudio"
I've deleted all of the other directories from DIM. I've left just the F: directory I want. Yet DIM keeps adding this other install directory.
I've deleted all of my DAZ configuration files and directories. But it still adds this directory. What is going on?
Nevermind. I found the problem. Why does this %@^#$% program allow to locations to set your install directory? What genius came up with that?
What is the purpose of the "Applications" tab if it is overridden by the top portion of the "Installation" tab?
The Application tab is to tell DIM where your applications are - particularly the ones not installed by DIM - so that add-ons and plug-ins go to the right place.
