The Application tab is to tell DIM where your applications are - particularly the ones not installed by DIM - so that add-ons and plug-ins go to the right place.

So then why is there a DAZ Studio application entry required? Don't you think it is a bit misleading or, at the very least, completely and utterly confusing?

Case in point, I have to unsintall and start again, because the two tabs were unsychronized, so it dumped files all over the place.

Here I will detail what I am dealing with:

    Installation tab -
Both 32 and 64 are set to F:/DAZStudio/Application

    Application tab -
I set 4.5 64-bit to F:/DAZStudio/Application. But DIM decided to add another directory, F:/DAZStudio/Application/DAZ 3D/DAZStudio4.

The second directory is specifically where I DO NOT WANT the program installed. I don't want the space in the directory name, but it seems I have absolutely zero control over that.

Oh, and all the plug ins installed to F:/DAZStudio/Application.

So uninstalling everything, again, to reinstall, again.

The location in the Application tab is for plug-ins, shaders and scripts which need to place their files in the application folder. I'm afraid there isn't a way to avoid the DAZ 3D folder - studio will always be placed in DAZ 3D/DAZStudio4 in the application folder set in the Install tab. If there's a technical reason for wanting no spaces open a support ticket to make a feature request. You could, for the release build, install manually and then set the path to the application folder in the Application tab for plug-ins and so on, though that isn't recommended.

I don't want the space because in the past it tended to cause problems when I was moving projects around. I am not desperately in need of removing the space. I am just use to doing it as a best practice.

However I am still going to argue that the way DIM is currently set up causes unneeded confusion.

It makes no sense to have two functions on two different tabs look like they do the same thing, when in actuality they perform two different functions. This is further compounded by the lack of documentation to reference.

I have already been having an incredibly difficult week with DAZ software, this latest escapade just wore my patience down to the bone. I have used DIM since day 1 and this just still got by me.

At the very least it would be nice if there was some sort of in context help that came up when you attempted to assign the DAZ Studio application to an empty directory.

(Honestly I would normally check DIM before I made a suggestion like that, but unfortunately I am in hour 8 of my marathon downloading session. With only 40 gigs downloaded out of 150. Like I said, it has been an extremely difficult DAZ software week.)

I've never thought of the ability to set the DS path as a source of confusion, but now you've mentioned it I do see your point. DIM does need to accommodate people who have installed DS manually, as long as that remains an option, but having it query an attempt to set the DS path to something other than the installed path if DIM has handled the installation sounds to me a reasonable feature request to make.

The main reason why it happened was that I was already irritated to the point of aggravation. I had to uninstall everything to try and fix the problems I was having. Since I didn't have a need to be in the "Installation" tab, it didn't even occur to me to go there. Instead I went straight to the Application tab so that I could reinstall DS. All I wanted to make sure of was that it went to a clean directory.

I already had had problems with DIM not uninstalling DS properly. You may not realize this, but if you install DS with DIM, then install an update to DS, DIM can no longer uninstall properly because it only sees the new update.

That shouldn't happen -- when DIM installs an update it should uninstall any leftovers from the prior version. Unless you're talking about settings files -- DIM does not uninstall those, otherwise you would lose your settings every time you updated.

That's not what happened when I attempted to uninstall DS on Tuesday.

All DIM removed was the desktop icon and the start menu link. Otherwise the directory was completely populated with the old install.

DIM was showing DS as uninstalled. When I downloaded and reinstalled DS, the installation process took a millisecond (which was the first clue that something was wrong). When I checked the installed items in DIM, DS was listed with a file size of "?" and no install date.

I had to uninstall through DIM, close DIM, rename the DS directory, then start DIM again and install DS.

Sorry to hear that. I just tried it and it uninstalled correctly for me. Glad you were able to fix it.

Thanks, but not fixed yet. I am in hour 10 of downloading. 80 gigs of 150 are done. So maybe, if DIM doesn't crash in the middle of the night, I will be back up and running by tomorrow morning.

all this was due to V4 wouldn't load into the scene?

on one computer or both computers? under 4.7?

    yikes

Uninstalling everything was my last resort. I opened a ticket on Tuesday morning at 3 AM. Hadn't heard anything back and I didn't want to go through the weekend down.

Only one computer was having an issue. I'm not sure what caused it and not sure if this will fix it. But I can't imagine a clean install wouldn't fix it.

first thing tech supports usually tell you to update your graphic card drivers, or roll back sometimes driver updates are buggy.
    then, check your folder permissions

not sure it's possible to have a totally clean ds install.
    the CMS is stubborn
    root out registry entries
the app preferences are in separate path

lucky you don't also have carrara relying on cms :)

Yeah, already did those on my own. And all the other things I could think of. Worked tech support 18 years ago, I know the usual reboot, recreate, uninstall, reinstall, etc etc.

A complete reinstall was the last ditch effort to fix it.

it was easier before win95. xcopy a directory, done. :)

    To close the circle...

Uninstalled and reinstalling fixed the Generation 4 figures and the Poser format figures.

My suspicion is that DS some how lost its connection / ability to read the older format figures. No idea what caused it, since the selective uninstalls / reinstalls didn't resolve the problem.
