Octane Standalone is free for .edu emails?!

I'm freshly post college and work for the University, so I have access to this. Can I use it with DS without buying the 100 Euro plugin or is it not even worth downloading?

You can export your scene from DS to .obj then import the .obj into Octane. You typically will need to setup your shaders in Octane, but you can use the educational version this way without purchasing the DS plugin.
Argh, manually setting the shaders is gonna be a draaaaaaaaaaaaag. Maybe I'll try it for kicks though. Thanks!
I should have added all of your texture map information will be imported into Octane, but any specialized 3Delight shader information will not transfer (SSS settings for example).
Edit: The render in the link below was done by exporting from Carrara to Octane standalone prior to the development of the Carrara plugin. It took longer to set up than using the DS plugin (or the now available Carrara plugin), but it wasn 't extremely painfull, especially considering it used a StoneMason scene.

It is also important to note that the education license is limited to Octane 1.2 (current version is 2.16 for Stand alone and OcDS). This has quite a few limitation compared to the current versions. It is useful to try it out and get a feel for how it works with your system. Be warned though: I did that with the demo and ended up buying the stand alone, OcDS and a new GPU because I got addicted to the work flow and speed and quality...

Is Octane worth the $400 ????
IMHO - Definitely! I was a huge skeptic before trying out the Poser Demo a little over a year ago. I always thought for that kind of money, I can afford to wait on my renders. Like thd777, I was immediately hooked when I tried it out. Not only due to the render speed, but also due to the improved workflow with the near real-time updates to any changes made and the improved quality of the renders that I was getting. The IPR in DS 4.7 has helped to make the DS/3Delight workflow more interactive, but I still much prefer the speed and quality of my Octane renders.

That will probably depend on your personal situation. For me the answer is an enthusiastic: yes, absolutely. I bought the stand alone license, the OcDS plugin and then updated both to version 2 when it came out. I also invested ~$1000 into an new GPU that is dedicated to rendering (my old one runs the displays but can also help with rendering if the scenes are not too complex). For me, the work flow with instant feedback, the overall speed, and the excellent materials (and an outstanding node based editor in the DS plugin) are well worth it. It is a life saver for animations and allows to use unbiased, physically accurate rendering where it previous took many hours to be done in 30 minutes to an hour or to render very large versions of such images.

There is so much to learn. I can't even use the camera well lol

So, your render time dropped in half due to Octane? What GPU do you have?
Were you the one who won the Nvida 780 this year? I got a Nvida 970 last month.

I won it at PAX East, a videogame convention. Not sure what you're referring to. Also, I'm mad jealous.

No, it dropped from "many hours" to usually less than an hour. The speed gain obviously depends on what you render and what engine you compare to. If we take Lux render for example as an unbiased engine (CPU based) then Octane is 5 to 8 times faster on my system while producing the same quality. When comparing to the DS 3Delight engine (biased renderer), I can get the same or better results with Octane in one tenth of the time or faster depending on the scene. I am using a dedicated GTX780ti with 3Gb vram.

That convinced me to risk buying DAZ bundle never looked back!!!
Missed getting 2 by a fortnight so on 1.5 but is still good.
Yes I bought the carrara plugin too! Am thinking about Poser one but not yet.
