I've always been able to render Geo-Grafts via Reality (until Reality 4, of course) ever since they came out. There still is an issue in 2.5 with G-G, but in some cases the problem is not visible and in others it can easily be worked around. The problem in R4 is an entirely different and new one, so it's not really that an old problem is back, and I'm assuming this came about because the mesh export functions for Reality 4 were completely re-designed. I'm sure there were good reasons for this, but I can't speculate on what they are.
As far as I can tell it's proving to be a tricky problem to solve, but Paolo (Pret-a-3d) is currently working on it and I think all we can do is be patient or use other resources for Luxrender for scenes with G-G.
I've not come across any work-around, and I doubt it can be fixed by just editing the .lxi file. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, though.

Interesting.
I recently did my first proper piece of art with Reality 4 which used, from what I understand, is a geo-grafted serpent's trunk from the Succubus Add-Ons set and it rendered fine. Strangely, the texturing of the actual trunk wasn't as realistic as it has been in 3Delight, but... It's there!

I still wonder how a massive problem like this just slipped through beta testing -.-
Yes, I meant to note that it isn't all Geo-Grafts, but it is most of them from what I can gather. I created my own as a test and it rendered fine. I think I may have posted that somewhere.
If the trunk uses displacement maps as an important part of the textures then that could account for the texturing difference. Disp maps need careful setting up to work well in Luxrender, especially on organic surfaces, and the best way to do this is not obvious.
