Can anyone recommend a good forrest set?

I have one from a 3rd party that while it looks nice and has nice options, is so big and complicated, it slogs posing on my 8core i7, and rendering takes forever.

Is that just the nature of life with things like trees with leaves and scuh?

I really love all of Andrey Pestryakov's nature sets. Loading the whole set can be a bit system intensive on most of them, but they come in pieces so you don't usually need to use the whole thing.

I highly recommend his Forest Elements set http://www.daz3d.com/forest-elements which I used to create the forest in this image: http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/43384/.

EDIT TO ADD: I think that rendering times are usually going to be slow on forests no matter what set you use. The key is to just put in what is actually going to be visible in the scene instead of trying to recreate a whole forest. :)

How do you load "just what's visible"...the elements you linked to says it needs "Forest" to work.. looking at that, it looks like it loads a big scene with stuff all over the landscape which the thing I tried before did. So despite just needing a small part, I have this giant land.

For the better part, yes, environements with flora will often be heavy. There are sets in the store that are low poly you could look at, make use of billboards for distance, and use the heavier ones for closeup work. Many of the environment sets have the trees and/or sections separated.

And they don't always indicate weather the trees can be made separate or not. I have found this out the heard way, and none of the sets I can think of are free.

Seascapes, I don't remember if there was an expansion pack for the alien shrubbery or not. Also
    http://www.daz3d.com/forest-hut
lots of really good looking trees. The sides and back of that mound can be used as a backdrop as well.

And the point about render times, and memory load is very valid. The poly-count on flora is never going to be light and look good at the same time.

FirstBastion. I will second that. Tho the list of "Required" items is kind of daunting if I may say. I don't have any of those myself. Been gobbling up more basic things thus far as a n00b, to bother with specific item products that are not part of a complete scene bundle of stuff.

"O", Novica has just been showing off some trees and stuff as well. Test renders and all.

'Forest Elements' ADDS morphs and stuff to the data of the trees etc from the Forest and adds an autumn and summer preload for the Forest itself.

It requires the Forest but it ALSO contains separate props of the various items for which you do NOT need to preload the Forest itself.

You don't need all of them. There are versions for each included. In fact you probably already have the cyclorama because i think it's included with studio, no?

That would be a "no". I didn't really look at what the list was, only noticed that there was a few for each of the suggestions. I am kind of guilty of only glancing at the Promo pics quickly for them. It looks like they all require the same stuff, "except the Winter Wonder 2004" that requires four rather then three items.

At least all of the required items are rather inexpensive for PC+ members.
    (EDIT)
FYI, If I owned any of the required items, it would indicate that next to the required items. Case and point. Genesis 2 Female Body Morphs, and Genesis 2 Female Head Morphs.

I recommend Stonemasons Enchanted forests myself,
    and they have separate props.
most my studio trees actually come from various sets by Merlin and Faveral too.
I have cut up Petroskys tree groups from forest and forest superior in Carrara vertex room into single trees but otherwise they load in groups, ok for big scenes but just a corner not so much.
(carrara has it own trees only done that for Octane render which hates Carrara'a trees)
you can of course do that in DAZ studio too with geometry editor and save as support assets if keen.
instancing helps fill out forests too

Stonemason's Enchanted Forests get my vote as well. I wouldn't recommend the woodland playsets unless unless you are very short of money, they are not in the same league.

Incidentally, the render time for trees and other vegetation can vary depending on whether they use transparency maps to define the shape of the leaves or whether it's done in geometry. Transmaps are relatively easy to do but result in longer render times. Predatron clearly states when his products do not use transmaps.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

Just to add in a note here.... Some of the items like the Cyclorama and Mill. Environment came in weird bundles that at one point were free. They have been passed out so many times over the years in all sorts of different bundles for a price and for free so there is a chance you have them and it won't tell you because if I remember right, single items included in bundles do not get listed as being owned, right?

Check your Product Library, just in case :) I bought the Woodland Playsets a long time ago, but the other 2 I've had included free in bundles so many times it's not funny LoL

No, they do. It's sub-bundles inside bigger bundles that don't get marked as owned.

Hmm, must be a bug somewhere then. Mill. Environment tells me "Add to Cart" instead of "Purchased", and I have several bundles it was in that didn't include "sub-bundles". :( The Cyclorama base tells me the same thing and I have that from bundles as well. :(

Cyclorama is a great set to learn to use :) It sure comes in handy for quick and easy backdrops and it's easy to set your own up :)

If you have Carrara, there are several amazing forest sets that take advantage of the relicator function and Carrara's tree modeler, along with custom realistic leaves.

Howie Farkes (several sets, but one example is stony creek, will be very large sets but with many options to place the camera)
