What inspired your Avatar? If that is what they are called...

Hello,

I take it that the pic beside your name when they post is called the Avatar? I want to create me one but I was curious what inspired some of the Avatars you guys have.

And one more question, What is the little green squares below the pic for?

Thanks for your time!

The Little green boxes (as we call them) show how many posts you have made. So when you made your 26th post you gained a little green box and lost the "New" bit and became a Member instead of a New Member.

There was even a thread where people would chat and thus make more posts, to boost their count. It has died a little lately though

The green squares indicate your "position" - in other words, how many posts you made, which translate into levels of enlightment. Thus you've got 61 posts, making you a Member - not a New Member (less than ten, I assume), but not yet an Active Member, Senior Member or, God forbid, an Addict ;).

I would have received 'addict' status long ago if it was based on 'lurking through the forums' and not on posts!

    LOL

BTW my Avatar was inspired by the fact that I "volunteered" to become a Moderator, and felt that my previous avatar of a sweet little girl in Welsh national dress was too cute for the change in status. So for a giggle I did the one you see now as an image, and my friends thought it was hilarious, so it has stayed, and someone even kindly animated it for me. If you see the original full size image you can see that the label on the Mad Hatters hat says "Moderator Hat" and reduced price.

That's funny! I have seen a lot of interesting Avatars and sometimes I just wanted to ask, 'Why That?"

Mine is a stylized spider combined with the symbol for "female." This is for two reasons: one, I'm very fond of spiders. And two, people online have usually assumed that I'm male, so I thought it was funny to put a hint in an avatar that's otherwise gender-neutral. In Western cultures the neutral tends to be perceived (unfairly, in my opinion) as masculine.

I participated in a challenge in which we had to use something called the spline modeler, which at the time I could only use to make very basic shapes. The theme of the challenge lent itself to a reference to old movies. I combined simple shapes with a simple free human figure to mimic the tin man from the wizard of oz, but put him in the electronic chair from the silent classic, metropolis - and thus it is Metropol-Oz.

Silly and unrealistic, so it is one of my personal favorites.

My current avatar was a take on New Year celebrations. The girl is actually wearing a New-Yearish tiara, which was visible in early camera angles. But the detail for a 100 X 100 image is not great, and I changed the camera angle anyway for more drama. Partner dancing has been an interest of mine for a long time. I have years of experience, train a couple times per week and perform once or twice per year, and love the "connection" I get between partners, especially when my partner is a beautiful lady.

I plan to change my avatar often, and I plan to do lots of different things mostly for practice and learning. It's sort of a promise to myself to "keep trying" and will give me incentive to at least complete a new piece every month or two.

    Greetings,
Well... I chose to use Cypherfox as my 'art handle', as it's a small tweak of my usual handle that I use for coding and techie stuff. I've loved foxes for all my life (I used to own 'vixen.com', and still own 'vulpine.com'). But for the longest time my avatar was a crop of Freddy Fox with Wine and Laptop. I love that picture, it's so awesome!

However, over the years I tried to get in touch with the photographer, to get permission to use it as my avatar, and never got a response. As time went on, and I did more of my own renders and images, I started to feel worse and worse about using someone else's image without explicit (he said it was okay) permission or implicit (the image was listed with a useful license) permission.

There was only ever one rigged 3D fox out there, as far as I know. It was made by 9mbi.com, and while the computer that runs their web site is still up (and was that ever an adventure to find!) the domain name was lost, and with it the ability to buy items from their site. I had bought it as soon as I knew it existed, and I finally took the time to set up a decent render with it, and make my avatar my own image.

Since then I've actually taken the fox-head image, rendered it without the background or anything, and turned it into a logo-ish 'stamp' that I can use with LIE, or anywhere else I want to.

Avatars are fun stuff; most everybody's has a story. :)

Well, blue is the can't-fail marketing color, right? And almost everyone likes it. It's a good choice for promos.

Lol I have no idea what is a "can’t-fail marketing color". I guess any colour pleasing on the eye can be considered as such. %-P

I love your use of blue in your avatar :)

Mine is one of those 'just because' things ... in this case just because Samedi is a great little character :)

lol, some study years ago, showed red blue and whit to be the colors of choice for marketing, tho I have doubts about the bias of that study, lol.

SickleYield, I never noticed the hint, lol. It just reminded me of a RISC CPU from the past that I am fond of. I'm guilty of just not having a clue of gender, so I often rip out my hair trying to keep my posts "Gender neutral".

As for ZDG, well, that is me, in a 'Technomage' outfit, in an equipment room. The other with a thunderstorm cloud in the background. It seamed appropriate for my former hobbies, and RPG characters I had played (a lifetime ago at this point).

Well, I don't mind being associated with computer hardware, either. ;)

An argument can be made for whether it's real or not, since it's hard to objectively test, but color psychology is a thing and marketing departments do use it on purpose. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_psychology

If only I could recant all the times I guessed wrong, and all the other times I didn't give it a thought.

The association, is more of a "Computer literate" rather then illiterate. Not an assumption of inanimateness, lol.

That study was something my dad had shown me way back in my school days. He was into business and that sort of stuff, and I just wanted to tinker with electronics back then, lol.

Oddly (for a mostly disconnected techie) I occasionally pay attention to the color of the year thing (2015: Marsala, #955251), as it gets picked up by some influential designers, and it never hurts to be putting out there a color that meshes reasonably well with the zeitgeist.

Plus it's a great way to get color ideas, to look through old CotY colors. :)

Mine is my old LiveJournal avatar that I've been using for yonks. It was taken from an image composited on an old paperdoll site which may or may not exist any more.

A page comes up when the URL is pasted into the header, but I don't know if it's functional. All the image links apper to be broken.
    It's at: [no elouai.com/doll-makers/candybar-doll-maker]www]elouai.com/doll-makers/candybar-doll-maker[dot]php

I think I've been using the icon for a decade or thereabouts, so the site is pretty old and is probably a ghost.

Mine is my first ever character morph/skin I've done.. it's for Genesis 1 and normally male so I painted the lips and mixed it with genesis female instead of male. Normally I play dwarves in role playing games but I like the dark elf and it's become my signature really so I keep it. It's also an overt hint at my gender, though people still get it wrong. LOL

I currently use a cropped picture of my Second Life avatar dressed in one of my favorite steampunk outfits. The name, Ameesa, is a name I invented for a story I once intended to write and use it in most of the forums I frequent and games I play.

JODel, they still work! Just the icons are broken. Look at this goofy thing I did with it. That site is a sugar overload and a half.

I spent over twenty years worth of spare time in a group that re-fought the Napoleonic wars with 30 mm lead miniatures, so it felt natural to crop one of the images for my avatar. Interestingly, I was unbeatable with artillery, quite good with infantry, and any cavalry I ran usually died to a man with no positive effect - so I picked a guard cavalry figure. :-)

JOdel - your avatar spooked me the first couple of times I saw it; I worked for years with a woman who looks exactly like your avatar - a certain J. O'Dell.

Mine's simple. In the early days of raytracing, a lot of renders were made of chrome spheres over various surfaces, often chessboards. Thus... well, now you know. :P

Ha! That's a kick. Yes that site is instant sugar-shock. But there was quite a vogue for that kind of icon builder site back in the early-oughts. You could manage a reasonably convincing self-cariacture (although skinny, decades younger, and dressed like a teeny-bopper) although it took a while waiting for the image to update at every adjustment. That particular site was the best of the 2-3 that I stumbled across.
