This sounds really cool. Did I miss any releases? I got the first two releases. I don't want to miss any. These are amazing! Could you post it on the first comment when new stuff gets released so it's easy to find? Thanks again!

edit: Ah, looks like you're already posting on the first comment. Good stuff!

The Underwater hair on a guy... the water could've been better, if I simulated the fluid dynamics in Blender (here it's simply a cube with my custom shader and a displacement map adapted from some merchant resource).

Carrara and I finally decided on a design, so... First peeks!

I'll model a belt and a clip on the back of the device for Genesis 3 before I run this out to folks. The question will end up being how detailed the mesh will be as opposed to displacement. I'm a lot better at modeloing than I am at mapping, so finding the balance will be the important bit.

Also, what features should there be? Radio? EQ? Other random fun?

DarkSpartan -- I suggest a window to show the tape inside!

    --MW

All the early ones had that, after all... It'll require some spiffy texture work, though, as the idea of modeling the interior of one of those things in its entirety from memory is rather... Daunting. Right now, I'm trying to get the mesh assembled in such a way that it has a door.

Although just by saying that, I've dated myself rather badly.

I started gathering visual references to make a simple Walkman..here's what I got so far if it'll help.

Hmm..I just remembered my first "Walkman" had straps to hang around the shoulder..maybe even it was in a fake leather case.

It'll be a day or two - but I've got a Walkman FM I can take some pictures of - Burgandy and silver, with an open-frame white plastic belt clip holster that allowed opening and swapping the tape while still in the holster.

I was doing The Cars, Tom Petty, J Geils, David Bowie, Blondie, Joan Jett, ect. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so hard rock was more my thing. Then in the 80s Alan Parsons Project became a group to hear, and is still an all time favorite for me. I also liked Pink Floyd, and the Tubes. My fashion sense was "Whatever I have to throw on!" lol I would hop from one club to the next to see what was happening at each. Danced with a lot of fine ladies, and they all said I was a good dancer, but I was just faking it! rotflmao They never seemed to mind, as their guys were usually afraid to jump out on the dance floor! All I had to do is stay in time with the music, and the ladies were satisfied with that.

Oh that took me back!! Same music etc. :D I remember I used to do the one dangly earring...the multiple necklaces around my wrist (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper)....the bubble skirts....etc. LOL. I still listen to 80s music....i was born late 60s....and while i love the 'classic rock' of the 70s, it's the 80s that will always be MY time. The Boy George dance...we all did that. And then moved into the Come on Eileen dancing. LOL

All of Mage's list; add in the Thompson Twins, Talking Heads, Pat Benatar, Jefferson Airplane, Tijuana Brass - and then the esoteric stuff. Sandler and Young (summer hosts of Kraft Music Hall for two years); classical music on period instruments, and other such.

Crep - I miss the 80s and I miss my phonograph!

Benatar was good stuff.  Hard rockin' stuff.  We did a few of her tunes in a band I was in for a while.  In the 80's, it was Jefferson Starship, not Airplane.  We did one tune by them, Jane.

  • namffuaknamffuak Posts: 4,191

Yeah, I kinda rang the 60s in there with Airplane - never that much of a fan of Starship. But if I'm gonnna ring in the 60s I should add the Doors, Chad & Jeremy, Peter and Gordon, the Chad Mitchell Trio, the Limeliters, Clancy Brothers and the Whiskey Hill Singers. :-)

...my least favourite memory of the 80s was the death of vinyl and the rise of CDs.

Back in the late 80s, I had won an injury lawsuit (a fairly decent settlement at that).  Before receiving the payment, a friend of mine drove me up to the big Tower Records (remember them?) in Seattle where I went through their classical selection and made up a "Christmas list" of what I wanted to add to my library.  About a week or two later, after I had the funds nicely stashed away in my account, we took a second road trip back to the "mecca of records". With list in hand I entered the store only to discover much to my shock and dismay, there was nary a record in sight as seemingly overnight, everything had gone to CDs.  Finally I spotted a few racks of "real records" in a back corner most of which turned out to be primarily 12" dance singles and pop music I had no interest in.  Needless to say, I was thoroughly crushed.

Now I had a really nice Hi Fi for which I replaced the old turntable with a high quality fully manual direct drive one (bought with funds from the settlement before the second shopping trip).

At the time, CD players were very expensive (even more than my turntable) and the sound of the first generation discs was so "squeaky clean", they were actually somewhat bothersome to listen to (they eventually added filtering algorithms to give CDs that warmer "analogue" sound).  The discs themselves were also expensive (about 60 - 75% more than a comparable vinyl LP) and the selection the store had for classical was pretty disappointing (most being the usual "warhorses" a lot of operas, and only a few things on my list which were mostly digital reissues of vinyl recordings).

Well making a long story short we at least had a decent dinner (which I paid for, the least I could do after having my friend take the time out of her schedule to drive me up there again) and then headed back to Olympia, sans what the whole purpose of the trip was for.  It felt kind of like a Maxwell Smart moment: "missed it by That Much".

I didn't notice that we got so many more lovely presents after the 80s Gym freebie, and I was lucky to download them before they expire - for us here in Germany I think it should be 12 pm today (the 11th). Thank you very much again!!!

The joys of rigging and weight mapping!  cheeky

Too true...have you any idea what causes an item to shrink when weightmapped? I tried doing a skirt for her and it shrank...

Your suit sounds fantastic...I would imagine it requires some very good morphs and rigging.

Did you wash it in digital hot water?   laugh

Europe, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart, Whitesnake, all very good memories. Needless to say that I kept to the rockscene as a follow up of the 70's, but those are the good days for me. My local hang-out was a biker bar and I could come and go as I pleased, have fun with the guys and gals (great bunch)... just as long as I didn't touch the bikes. (golden rule 1)

Wild times too, but wouldn't like to have missed it for the world, as it made me who I am today. An old soul maybe, with a firm belief in a sense of honor, respect for others (until the gloves come off) and common sense. Even back then I was making wooden toys with my grandfather in his workshed, paint and varnish the stuff... now I just do it all on this computer.

I'm tellin'ya, it's a really nice car well worth the trouble!

The only bit that didn't convert cleanly where the springs, they had their normals inverted, the rest was fine (using SketchUp 8 and TIG's free .obj exporter).

Found a nice set of spoke wheels and wooden steering wheel on GRABCAD, things are looking better and better : )

    Not quite finished yet though.

    Cheers!

And thank you very much for the outfits, looking forward to see the 'Miami' suits!

Speaking of Miami, for all the tinkerers out there: here's a link to a rather nice Ferrari Daytona RagTop on 3dwarehouse (.skp SketchUp format) by B. Panyawat

Unfortunately it has been treated rather badly by its last owner, so it needs a bit of tender loving care to look right again.

Give it a new set of wheels, put the steering back to where it belongs, take off the added exhaust pipes, and get rid of the silenced .45 stashed in the boot.

Quite a bit of work, but it really is a nice car that's worth putting some effort in for some nice vice scenes : )

    Cheers!

    Erik

I passed on that one...it did look like too much work.  Plus it didn't want to export cleanly for me, there was more than average clean up.

Maybe you could post the converted for DS files, depending on the license? You are right though, it does look very nice indeed.

Maybe it was the exporter I used, but when I tried it...not pretty, at all.

I did find another one, elsewhere in 3ds format that did convert a lot cleaner, for me.
