Map Transfer Results: All Black Textures

I am trying to use the map transfer to convert some V4 maps to V5. The reason I want to do this is because I want to use some of the features of Skin Builder with them, but it only works with V5 UV textures. Okay, so I created templates for each of the major groups (face, torso, limbs) and added the appropriate surfaces. Then I selected an output, made the format PNG initially then for second attempt, JPG. The issue is that in both cases (PNG and JPG) all I get are pure black textures as output.  This isn't helpful.  Anyone have any idea why I get nothing but a pure black texture via the Map Transfer?

Thanks!

  • have you done this before? are you following a guide? I haven't done this in a long time but I never had that issue.

I have never done it before.  There is a tutorial on DeviantArt that is useful but left out that you have to have a seperate template for each texture.  I found that  out from a thread on the site here.  I've done everything per the guidance.  Specifically, I load the textures onto G2F and then create a template and drag over the appropriate surfaces (either head, torso, or limbs; one template for each of these texture sets).  I then select the target UV (in this case V5) and select a destination folder. When I did it with PNGs I got totally black square for a diffuse and the Specular actually had the limbs all black but the background was white so you could see the "bearskin" of the limbs laid out as expected, just with no detail.  When I switched from PNG to JPG, all the converted textures were 100% black, not white or anything else.

Someone said you shoud use one texture at a time, not try to do Diffuse and Spec and Bump all at once so I got rid of everything but diffuse and tried again, same result.  There is not much discussion about this feature so perhaps it got broken somewhere along the way but if it's operator error I would love to get it going.

  • I just made a map transfer from V4 Lana Elite to V5 and it worked as supposed. All textures are converted including bump and spec maps. I used Genesis, applied V4 Lana Elite, then opened the Map Transfer dialogue, right click create new Template - it's named Template 1 and I drag all V4 textures with the prefix 1_ into this template. Then I select the template and all included textures, select target UV map:V5, select the folder where the converted textures should go to, select file type and all and carry on with the next template. When I'm done with all texture maps I end up with seven templates. Next I click on Accept and find the converted textures in the folder I've specified before.

Here's my similar screenshot, with the mapped textures shown.  I don't see anything obviously different here but mine does not work.

I think I figured it out. When I set up the original skin, I didn't like the lips. They were too bright and didn't look like they belonged on the character. So I used another lip texture, of course with another UV.  Also the original texture had the lips painted in larger than the actual lip surface so when I replaced the lips, I had to create a slightly different texture which got rid of the lips overflowing onto the Face surface but I didn't use that texture for the nostrils, I used the original.  So I had a template for a surface set that was mixing several textures and UVs and I guess I confused the Map Transfer tool.  I just removed the lip surface and set the nostril to be same as the face and it worked fine. One thing though is that it did the same thing for the torso and the limbs, which didnt have all this oddness so now that I sorted out the head, should be interesting to see if the others are magically fixed as well.   Thanks for reading!

  • That's a start :) Hope you get it working on the other maps too.

It's solved, got all the textures mapped over to V5 perfectly.  Now I can, for instance, apply those gigantic high res normal maps from macro skin product to an old V4 skin.  In fact, I did.  See below.  Had to turn down the intensity of the normal so it was a bit more subtle, not "Crater face".  I think it turned out good, beleiveable ammount of detail if you look closely.  Thanks for the help!  Next some makeup effects from Skin Builder!

Thanks.  I "glammed" her up a little with LIE based makeup for V5. This is really helpful to make easy use of all those old V4 textures but updated with the high res add-ons for V5 UVs, really good tool. Surprised I don't see more people talking about using it!

  • I'm having this problem too, and I can't seem to beat it.  I have a figure with the genesis male uv mapping.  I have a face texture I made with facegen, that I want to adapt to M4.  I have gone through all the steps according by the book as far as I can tell.  When I hit "Accept", it starts working, but halfway through it just stops.

I was having this problem but I changed my renderer from Iray to 3Delight and no longer get the black textures.

that seems to have done the trick

  • I was having the same issue and switching to 3Delight also helped me to stop having the black textures. However, I get very noisy textures now, even with the highest quality setting. See attached image.

I'm trying to map Monique 6 to the Female Base. Any ideas?
