  • Ever bump into your Doppelgänger on the streets of Old London?

Not sure this style works for a full scene (as opposed to just a character on a uncomplicated background), but I figured I'd try it out . . .

Looks a little bit "busy" to me, but that might be made worse because I'm looking at the image about 18" tall on this monitor. I'll look at it on some other devices. The whole process is really designed to create comic book sized images (print). Maybe it'll look better to me at that size, and maybe I should start printing all these, eh?

I'll re-run the Noodles in the Woods scene today, as that one has a very busy background, too.

As always, thank you for your feedback! It truly helps in many ways since I spend so much time in my bubble developing . . .

Noodles in the Forest - another scene with a complex background. This time more shades of gray to see more detail and allow for the black lines to show up more.

  • I love the full two blown scenes with Streets of old London and Noodles. Very nice.  That outfit is rather remarkable.  It is one of the best examples of clothing and extremely versatile.  I love the way it looks in your Streets of Old London scene.  The line sketch look is truly outstanding!

Forcing myself to post 1 per day is really helping to flush out issues that need to be addressed. Having a large database of analysis pass sets representing a wide variety of scenes is really helping to speed-up further development of the algos and styles. Been working on a somewhat major improvement on the full color styles, which should be done soon. Thanks for watching!

I've seen many flying machine designs by Leonardo, but I don't remember ever seeing this one before . . .

Old model of the Millenium Falcon made by Andy Crook in 2004. If you're out there, thanks Andy - it's a fantastic model!

Funny you should say that, mjc1016. I had started to develop a blueprint style, but never got too far with it. Haven't worked on it in a long time, so I took it out of the pipeline (but maybe I'll put it back in):

I would love to do a lot more Star Wars renders (I saw the original movie in theaters when I was 4-5 years old), but don't want to invite any IP issues by doing so. We'll see what kind of response posting this brings ;)

Since people seem to enjoy it, here's the Millenium Falcon in a few more styles. The full color painting was uploaded twice - once as a JPG and again as a PNG (in order to test and see whether uploading as a PNG stops the forums from aggressively re-compressing).

@mjc1016: I also ran the blueprint algorithm that I had started working on, but never finished.

    For those interested:

The JPG file that I uploaded was 269kb, and it got re-compressed by the forum software to 53kb.

THE PNG file I uploaded was 556kb, and it got re-compressed by the forum software to 624kb.

This behavior is . . . interesting. IMHO, the JPG re-compression is too aggressive, and the PNG re-compression should not have been done since the resulting file was actually bigger lol.

Oh well, the paint strokes in the PNG obviously look better than the jpg, but it should given that the file is more than 10x bigger.

Are you sure that what you are saving the png in isn't doing a little compression?

556 kb is close to 90% of 624 kb...

  • algovincianalgovincian Posts: 2,618

My limited understanding of the PNG format is that the compression is a 2 part thing - (1) a predictive filtering which makes (2) DEFLATE (zlib lossless compression) more effective. I don't normally use PNGs, but it was suggested to me that it may be a way to avoid the aggressive JPG re-compression that the forums are setup to use on uploads.

I saved the file out of Photoshop CS2 (Save for Web) where, as far as I can remember, there aren't any compression settings (not in front of that machine atm). No matter what, it seems that the file should not get bigger when it is re-saved by the forum software. Maybe the forum's PNG has the pre-filtering turned off, which differs from CS2? I don't know.

My choice of wording was probably poor, and I should have said re-saved as opposed to re-compressed. After all, I'm an engineer, so it's to be expected lol.

My guess is, that Save for Web is a 'preset' amount of compression...to make them smaller for browsing.   And yeah, the forum software is probably undoing that.

  • Wow it really shows the range you can produce, being able to set the colors of the ink outstanding !!!

Greg, very nice edge detection and outlining. I'd be interested in seeing a beauty pass as directly output by 3DL.

For my own work, a job like this would have taken at least three hours, including two hours doing manual cleanup in Photoshop. I'd probably still do some cleanup in PS, but the output is close to ready as-is.

Which pass is it you would like to see, Tobor? The only output I have directly from DAZ are the analysis passes (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/980556/#Comment_980556). Did you want to see one of those? One of them (the base pass) full color, and lit by a single point light. It's the closest thing to a normal render that I produce.
