My categories disappear then reappear when reloading studio

Since upgrading to 4.9 I've had continuing issues with homemade categories. Lately what has happened is while using studio the directory with my custom categories will entirely disappear only to come back when I restart studio. It seems like there is something unstable with this feature that causes it not to function. I am not sure what triggers it. Any suggestions?

What is your OS and is the content on the same drive as the program is installed to...internal or external?

If the CMS is stopped, then categories will disappear.

If the drive spins down/sleeps you can lose them, too...especially if that is where the database is stored.

Yes. It does appear that the CMS is stopping and I must restart it to get my categories to work. I am running windows 8.1 My drive is not going to sleep because usually I am rendering when CMS stops working.

Anyway to keep CMS from shutting off or at least restarting itself? I remember this happened a lot with earlier versions of Studio but 4.8 was much more stable.

Which CMS are you running (it should be PostGRE for 4.9...and that should run as long as Studio is open)?

Look in Windows Event Viewer to see if there is something there about PostGRE terminating...

What AV/firewall/security suite are you running?

I have Symantec antivirus. I don't have any firewall or security software beyond what is native win win 8.1

I could not see where I could tell what version the PostGRE is. I could uninstall and reinstall it. There are a number of beta ones available for download. the one currently installed calls itself POSTGRESQL CMS

  • A good way to make sure that PSQL is the cause here is to open up Windows taskmanager whenever your folder disappears (using control-shift-escape) and then checking the running processes (its a separate tab in Win7, not sure about Win8 from mind). Make sure you see something like "postgres.exe" mentioned in the list. If its not there then PSQL isn't running (which seems odd). If it is listed then something else is going on.

Okay, it took a day or two but it stopped running during a render. This is what I see in my Task Manager.

It looks like Postgre is still running....but dead quiet.

Does it only happen during a render?

How much memory do you have...yes TM shows that only 16% is being used, but I can't figure out if that is all physical memory of if it is including swap space, too.

I have 24 gig of ram. Seems to happen when rendering in Studio. Never happened before upgrading to 4.9 and I'm not taxing the system that much.

I tried reinstalling the postgre thing, but it still cruds out on me. When I restart studio its all fine again though...
