Can anyone help me figure out why IRAY shuts off my computer?

Hello DAZ3d,

I have been using DAZStudio 4.9 since launch, and have done a few IRAY pictures as well. But, as of late, every time I set up DAZS to render in IRAY, after 5-10 mins, my computer sudden, shuts off. I have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 2GBs VRAM card, 8 GBs of RAM, use Windows 64-bit and I have an Intel AMD FX-6100 Six-Core processor. Since I began rendering in IRAY, for some strange reasn, my comp begins to overheat, and my comp shuts down 50-75% into the render. (I render pics while I am asleep at night since it takes 1-3 hrs to render a single scene)  But now, any time I set DAZStudio to IRAY preview (or render in IRAY) my comp's temp jumps 20 degrees (40-66C) and the inside of my computer is releasing intense heat. I did watch a recent 'Introduction to IRAY' from DAZ3d, and changed render modes from photorealistic to interactive. I even unchecked the CPU in the settings and checked onlu my GTX 760 card. And after a few mins of rendering in IRAY, my comp suddenly shut off.

 

I don't know why this happening all of a sudden, could someone help me figure out why my computer is suddenly shutting off when I use IRAY?

It sounds like there is something wrong with the cooling system in your computer. Probably the cooling fan for the processor has stopped or is needing cleaned. Open up the case and make sure it is turning or it hasn't come loose. Don't run the computer if it is that as you will burn out the processor or the board itself. It isn't DAZ Studio that is causing it but it is highlighting a problem.

That would be also my guess. Sounds like a Thermal Problem.

Had the Same problem when my Case Fan cable disattache itself feom the motherboard.

Open your PCs case

1. Test : Check if all fans are working (Case, CPU, GPU) -> If not repair

2. Test: Run with you PC Case open (much better cooling) If it stops happening you need to improve the airflow in your pc (Card placement, Fan Placement, Fan speed, Fan size etc.)

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it. :) I checked all the fans, (psu, cpu, video card and 2 additional ones blowin out of the comp) and all are working fine. I also cleaned them all with compressed air 2 nights ago. For some reason, my comp seems to stay on when I don't use IRAY for daz (I can render in normal 3Delight) But the minute that I switch to DAZ, everything spikes temperature wise and that is when my comp shuts down/or restarts. Just a quick bit of info that I forgot to mention in my last post. I ran out of te adhesive that you out on the cpu chip to keep it cool, and its running on none. (I cleaned off the cruddy, old stuff that was on it from before, a few nights ago. Do you think that would be the cause of my comp suddenly shutting down when I run IRAY?

It's probably getting too hot and shutting down. Were you able to run Iray before? If not, it might just be too much for your computer to handle. If so, has anything else changed? Perhaps you've got some processes leaking memory and running rampant. I'd take a look at Task Manager and see what's chewing up your CPU and memory.

Most certainly it is the lack of thermal paste on the processor. It is needed so that there is good contact between the processor and the heat sink. Having too much and too little will have the same effect. A thin, even, layer is best.

If you have a regular heat sink on the CPU then you really should clean it with a toothbrush because most the time compressed air won't get it. You need to look deep inside the fins and see it there is any crud. If so then try cleaning it with the toothbrush. It really does sound like overheating. It could also be what Chohole just pointed to. If the thermal paste gets to broken down it will cause over heating as well. How old is your system? What size case do you have? Is there enough space for good circulation? Also, do you have the computer in an enclosed area like a cupboard in a desk that is for tower?

Do you also have a graphics card in the box? Does it require power from the power supply as well as being plugged into the board? If so, does he wattage meet the criteria required for your system including the graphcs card?

It could be the PSU not providing enough stable power to GPU.

You can also try rendering without CPU checked in render settings and just the GPU.  If it still crashes you can probably rule out the CPU.

It's also possible that the CPU fan/heatsink wasn't fully seated on the CPU after cleaning the old thermal paste. Fishtales is correct that thermal paste is a must. Besides better thermal conductivity, it also provides complete contact between the cpu and the heatsink, to make up for minor differences in "flaness" of the components.
