Rendering speed?

I don't what it is, but I used to be able to render an image in seconds depending on how much stuff was in the scene. Now it takes several minutes (like 10) for an image to even begin rendering. Is there a way that I can get this speed rendering speed back and still get quality images?

Are you using the same render engine (Iray or 3Delight)? Same hardware?
