How does one attach materials or shaders to a primative? Is there tutorial on this that is current to recent versions of the software, i.e. that doesn't require interpolation?

Use the Surface selection tool to click on the primitive - that will select both the object and its only surface. Double-click the preset for the shader you wish to apply. make any desired adjustmens to settings in the Surfaces pane. Once satisfied, go to File>Save as>Materials preset with the item stil selected.
