What does DAZ3DIM actually do?

I typicailly use DAZ3DIM to install new content, but in studio I have to click install on content before I can use it. Why? Shouldn't already be installed?

DS should recognize items installed with DIM as installed (color icon to indicate installed, although it will still have the install icon overlay since you might want to install it with Connect). Are these items which were installed before upgrading to 4.9, or items installed with DIM after 4.9.2 or 4.9.3 were installed and launched?
I purchased new items today and installed via DIM. I then started Studio (I have 4.9.2) and looked for them. The items show up, but I have to right-click and select install before using.
Are the icon grey scale or color? Grey scale means available but not installed, color means installed but they will still have an install symbol and may also be installed by Connect.
