Iray weirdness

I'm finally trying Iray and I have three(3) different machines I've tried it on. The first is an old Dell XPS 9000 with a GT 220 video card which I use as a backup and for some tweaking of scenes. The main machine is a XPS 8700 with a GT730 card which is where I do most of my DAZ work and I also have a laptop with a GT 435M I only use for DAZ when I'm on a trip somewhere since even though it's got an i7, it is pretty slow compared to the desktops and only has 8 gigs of RAM. (maxed out).

The older 9000 will render in Iray in CPU mode but returns a blank if I try to use the GPU. (the checkerboard pattern indicating nothing there.)

The 8700, the one I really need to work if I'm going to seriously get into Iray returns a purple or maybe magenta image. After hundreds of iterations I have a picture that is recognizeable but either tinted or completely magenta. Nicely defined edges to people and such but stuff like eyelashes are still just dark blobs that look like they were drawn with a magic marker. Not defined at all.

The laptop of course works perfectly.

What security software do you use?

Pink image    AV software,  probably Kapersky, although there is one other does it, has quarantined a .dll that Iray needs.  It is a flase positive.   Let me see if I can find the thread all about it for you.   bbiab.

The GT220 is not going to work with IRAY, as that was several generations before CUDA.  The GT435 is pretty much the same problem.  CUDA wasn't really part of the nVidia architecture until the 600 series, and doesn't have all the needed features until the 700 series (IIRC).

Thanks for the info on the deleted file. I reinstalled Studio and no more "purple terror" but now it returns a black screen if I try to use "Photoreal" though it works OK in "interactive", just very slow compared to 3Delight. The 435 seems to work fine using the card instead of the CPU.

According to Nvidia the 435M has 96 "cudas" so that explains why it works in GPU mode. Still can't get the 730 to behave in "photoreal", just "interactive" and the XPS9000 running in CPU mode has a similar glitch. Well, I'll play with it a while and compare settings with the laptop.

Accidentally discoverd why the GT730 didin't work in photoreal. It seems all my lights were being blocked even though I had shadow off, (The set has trees all around for different views.) but when I removed the distant light the headlight lit enough of the scene to get a render even if it is still rather dark except right in front of the camera. This thing will take some getting used to.

  • In Photoreal shadows cannot be switched off - if you are seeing that option you must have Show Hidden Parameters enabled in the pane's option menu.

I switched off the 'cast shadows' for the lights themselves. Does that mean you can't have a general ambient light and have to turn off everything that might cast a shadow on the scene? Do all the side lights and such cast shadows also and any outdoor scenes with a lot of trees and bushes get very dark? Indoor scenes would require removing walls to get any light to the subjects.

  • In Photoreal mode in iray all lights and all objects produce shadows. You can switch to Interactive mode, but that also disables other things (such as emissive surfaces) so it isn't a zerp-cost switch. Iray is much more literal-minded than 3delight, for good and ill.

OK. I found Sickleyield's video on how to light up the dome and various other lighting tricks. It looks like in most cases it would be more trouble than it's worth since most of my stuff involves a lot of characters and often complex scenery (without Iray optimized textures) so I think I'll mostly stick with 3Delight for now. It would take as long to light everything just right as it does to build the scene and without a monster machine like Sickleyield and some others seem to have it takes all night to render a high res picture. Where the heck did she even find a computer that can hold and use all those video cards simultaneously?
