Question reg. waxy toony skin with Iray...

Hi, not sure if I can explain very well what I am after.

With 3Delight and SSS you could achieve a almost waxen silicone baby doll like skin on characters, I just wonder if it is possible using Iray.

If so, how could I do it OR is their a product that would help me to achieve it.

Start by removing any bump/normal maps...and tweak from there.

In the various Skin surfaces, remove any maps in Base Bump, Top Coat Bump and Normal Map slots...

I would appreciate any help with this as well!

Here's a very, very, quick play to get the effect.

I removed the normals, bump etc as suggested and then I played with the translucency. I used 1 for the Weight, White for the color and a pale pink for the tranmitted color.

Here's the poser version of the effect that I would like to achieve.

Here's the Original pic before the skinplay

And here's the result, I didn't let it cook for too long :) Still needs a lot of work but I hope someone more experienced has some more info or a product the I could use.

Thing is, it's trivial to get various waxy looks. I mean, what most people struggle with is getting stuff NOT to look waxy. ;)

I actually love bjd dolls and I'd love to be able to replicate the look in a render :)

Leave SSS, Specular and bump; just remove the Diffuse textures, and then adjust the colour to one you're looking for; use Scatter only in Base Color effects (not scatter and transmit)

Then play around with glossiness and reflectivity. And Top Coat Weighting, Glosiness and Reflectivity, with Roughness also having an effect If required, and it may do, also reduce the bump and normal, once the shader starts to look something like you're after. I eventually reduced bump and normal to a small amount.

The images were created with Disa as the starter; I'd already tweaked the textures and shaders before tweaking further here.

I did try removing SSS and spec, but preferred the look when I removed just the diffuse. Left image is what I started with; the right after tweaking.

Edit: think I ended up switching to scatter and transmit for SSS. Try both.

    You're welcome.

Not sure it's the look you're after; if it's permitted, and you own the character, I could share the shader setting I used. Perhaps a mod could let me know if it is permitted.

If not, and you're having trouble, I can try recreating witht the default G3F shader... Hmmm interesting.

Default G3F. All I did was apply IRAY shader to the figure, then tweak; also used Scatter and Transmit, renderwise it was about the same (Scatter or Scatter and Transmit); all the glossy surfaces up the render time anyway.

I suppose this is technically my first Manga style render. :)

It's the same shader on the 3 images, the only variation is the Sun-Sky settings, specially on Haze parameter,

there is my recipe for that shader:

My attempt, looks more silicon rubber than wax though.  I added the diffuse maps to the Translucency Color channel and the Translucency Weight channel for the Face surface really needs a mask for the eyebrows.

I am sorry for the late reply.

THANK YOU for the screenshot, I shall give it a go tonight after the family is fed and watered and I have some time to myself.

    You are a STAR.

    Here's my attempt...

Ignore Lolo's lack of eyes, I should have used her geografts but didn't...

I'm working on a shader preset and a script to do some map transfers.

  • I suppose with the right lighting and postwork you can come closer to a plastic doll.

This is the same skin I used in the first post, no messing with the shaders.

It's always best to provide an example of what you want. You're looking for a "waxen silicone baby doll"; some respondents here have interpreted 'waxen' as 'waxy', the terms are open to interpretation: 'waxy' suggests a glossy sheen. Most silicone dolls have a matte, unshiny finish, and are not transluscent, or have very little translucency. .

Perhaps what you're after is the silicone look of the human and creature characters like that in the movie Minions? Or if not, a screen shot of precisely what you're after would surely be useful.
