Importing OBJ models into DS4

I imported this obj model using DS4's default import settings.

I applied only diffuse maps. In 3Delight renders I get these black spots ( see attached image ) and the model seems to be getting rounded/smoothed by DS4 as well.

BTW - I did a test render with IRAY and the black spots were gone.

Any gurus have tips for importing obj models and if there's a way to get rid of the black spots?

Thanks!

Looks like flipped normals.  If you select them with the geometry editor tool there should be a right click option to flip them the right direction.

  • Thanks a lot, Wwes !! I'll try that

  • That did not fix the black spots, but I appreciate the help learning how to flip normals. Thanks a lot wwes!

    Where is the model from?

There could be other issues, like n-gons causing the problem.  Try turning off smoothing...it's in the Surface properties, near the bottom.  If they disappear with smoothing off, then it's likely ngons/geometry problems\.

They look like concave polygons to me (bad model making), and DS has never liked them.

In which case Edit>Object>Geometry>Triangulate should fix the problem, albeit rather inefficiently (since it will convert every quad or higher polygon into triangles).

That brings up the idea of new features along the lines of "find and select n-gons" and "triangulate only selected polys" — think there's any chance of getting this in D|S5 if someone were to put in a suggestion? Every now and then I come across items that really only need triangulation in part of the mesh: doing the whole thing would be, as you said, inefficient.

Sounds like a good feature request, especially given that it appears a lot of the needed code may already be there. That doesn't guarantee it will be implemented, of course, and there may be hitches that aren't apparent from the outside.
