Charity's birthday is approaching. Snape suggests they go out to dinner, perhaps take in a movie. And then, since he would rather not make a mistake, he asks Charity outright what she would like for a gift.

Charity asks for a ring. Does he consider this a ring-worth relationship?

Upon reflection, he does. And asks the proper question in form. Well, it was in some form, but given that the form was to quote one of the least romantic proposals in literature, he can only be grateful that Charity takes the intention and ignores the content.

Charity's choice of restaurant is a South Indian place in Muggle London. From there, they visit a jeweler, also in Muggle London, and choose a ring from a collection of estate jewelry.

Harry *had* promised to visit Myrtle again, but there was no chance of slipping away from his Housemates to do it. That problem had an easy answer. He took them with him and they *all* went to visit Myrtle. In the morning. By daylight.

It should be noted in passing that Sally-Ann was no longer at Hogwarts (and they missed her) since an opening had turned up at the Royal Ballet School over the Christmas break.

Myrtle was in an uproar. This time her grievance was of someone throwing a book through her head.

They found the book where it had washed up under one of the sinks. It was a plain Muggle diary which seemed to be blank.

Harry intends to show the diary to Professor Snape later, but succumbs to the temptation to write in it during History of Magic. The vision it sends him gives him a minor blackout, which in turn causes a bit of a stir. After which, diary has disappeared.

He still tells Professor Snape about it.

Snape tells the Headmaster and a search is begun for the book, for it is clearly a dangerous artifact. The business of the book combines with the mysterious voice that Harry has been hearing. In a discussion regarding that, Professor Snape asks whether Harry might be hearing a snake?

This brings to mind a comment made by the boomslang in Professor Kettleburn's menagerie about "the one in the walls".

So Harry, Snape, and Professor Kettleburn question Bob, the boomslang about the snake in the walls.
This is a new illustration with no direct 2011 counterpart. But there is an earlier version of the menagerie.

With the information they had put together, a search of the drainage system seemed indicated. Professor Kettleburn was the creature expert. With Professor Lupin to assist.

The search did turn up some interesting possibilities.

Very nice lighting in the new one!

  • JOdelJOdel Posts: 6,286

Thanks, I think I am getting better at that. But I also suspect that I have beter resources to play with these days. I think that in the 2011 versions I was mostly grabbing the light sets from DM packages and messing with them. Or using some of Fabiana's older Poser lights sets.

My go-tos these days are Flipmode's Easy Environment lights, which I tend to use as worklights during scene building, and Khory's Caressed by Light packages, usually package 2 for the final render lights. Plus linear point lights as needed. I often keep the sun light from the Flipmode set for shadows

Fighting with lighting sometimes takes as long as building the scene.

Charity's mother has come for a visit. All the way from New Zealand. Snape and Charity meet her in Hogsmead and Snape is pleasantly surprised by his prospective mother-in-law.

Upon their return to Hogwarts, they are met by Filtch, who informs them that there is a meeting in the Headmaster's office concerning Professors Kettleburn and Lupin's discoveries.

Easter break arrives. After the necessary subterfuge of Harry spending the first night in his hidden room at the Dursleys, He and Snape remove to Lacewing Cottage, where they are joined by Charity, and Harry sees his new house, and property.

He is also introduced to his benefactress, the late Madam Fletwock.

Easter break at Lacewing was mildly social. Professor McGonagall came for an afternoon to help reset the ward stones, and Nicholas Flamel made a visit with a traditional housewarming present of bread and wine.

Master Flamel's visit became something more than merely social after Snape told him of the mysterious disappearing book, and the Basilisk in the walls at Hogwarts. This prompted a side trip back to Hogwarts to interview Myrtle.

Upon returning to Lacewing, Master Flamel shares his conclusions, pointing out that the capture of the Dark Lord followed so closely by the appearance of one of young Tom Riddle's possessions, could hardly be coincidence. How many people have been told of the defeat of Lord Voldemort, back during the Christmas break?

It was a very short line to be drawn between; "Who knows about Lord Voldemort's defeat?" and Lucius Malfoy.

The Malfoys are invited to tea, and while Narcissa and Charity discuss wedding plans, and Harry and Draco occupy themselves elsewhere, Snape corners Malfoy to get his reaction to the havoc that mysterious book is causing at Hogwarts.

Malfoy had dumped the book in a 2nd hand bookstall in Knockturn Alley to get it out of his house. He did not take the news that it had turned up at his son's school at all well.

Malfoy also starts connecting dots, leading to the suspicion that Bellatrix had also been entrusted with such an item.

Narcissa has power of attorney, so a visit to Gringotts is in order.

Easter break is over, and the students are back at Hogwarts.

Or, rather, most of them are. After the 'welcome back' feast, Minerva is notified by Percy Weasley that Zack Smith is not in the First Year dorm. He was one of the students who went home for the break. He was seen on the train at the beginning of the break. But he has not returned, and has sent no message of why not.

The Wizarding World Explorers have another field trip. This one to a Muggle venue. In fact, to the ballet. They attend a matinee of Giselle under the sponsorship of Lady Barbara Fitch-Fletchly, followed by tea at Summerisle sponsored by the Malfoys (who refused to be outdone by a Muggle). Charity briefed them all on some of the symbolism of the dance moments and poses that they were going to be seeing ahead of time.

Harry and his housemates were particularly looking forward to the outing because Sally would be there.

The excision was a smashing success.

While they were gone for the day, Hogwarts had a bit of unanticipated excitement of its own. Earlier, the Weasley twins checked the Marauders' Map and discovered a stranger in their common room. Upon investigation, they realized that the stranger was an Animagus (being third years, they had seen Professor McGonagall's demonstration, and knew that Anamagi exist). While Ron was off at the ballet, they had captured him, and turned him in to the Headmaster.

The capture of Peter Pettigrew, and his questioning under Veritiserum opened up a can of worms, and dumped them in the Ministry's lap. Upon checking the archives for a transcript of Sirius Black's trial, Madam Amelia Bones discovers that no such transcript exists, nor was Black ever questioned. She is quite thoroughly Not Amused.

She calls Senior Auror Moody into her office to hear what he has to say about the matter.

This is a new illo with no 2011 counterpart.

Back at Hogwarts, Harry discovers a mysterious room on the 7th floor. It seems to be enormous, and filled with forgotten items. And someone has been living there.

When he brings Professor Snape to see, the place has been tidied up and there is no sign of an occupant left.

Then, before any investigation regarding the intruder can be mounted, the Basilisk is released into the school. Professor Burbage is petrified (having seen it through Harry's magical peephole in the Explorers' clubroom), and Harry calls it back into the chamber where the Elves have deposited a meal for it. A meal heavily dosed with a sleeping potion.

They do try to interview the creature, but it isn't particularly chatty. And soon succumbs to sleep. The Chamber is re-sealed and Professor Sprout has mandrakes available for a restoration draght for Charity.

Sirius's trial results in an acquittal, of course, but also in an involuntary commitment to St Mungo's for medical treatment and evaluation on whether he is sufficiently sane to be allowed out on his own.

He is not at all pleased with yet another imprisonment.

Out of the blue, Professor Snape receives a letter from a Gordianus Prince, who claims to be his uncle. With the recent death of his father, Severus's grandfather, Gordianus wishes to attempt to heal the breech between their batches of the family. It was Severus's grandfather who disowned Severus's mother upon her marriage, and forbade all contact or assistance to them.

Between the lines, it is clear the part of his motivation is the fact that his eldest granddaughter is due to start Hogwarts the following year, and he does not want one of her instructors to be holding a grudge.

Severus and Charity are invited to dinner to meet the rest of the family. Among them Severus's cousin and his wife and children. The most memorable of which is the eight-year-old Marygold.

After meeting the Princes, the next thing on the agenda was for Snape to meet the Burbages, who had portkeyed from New Zealand for the wedding.

Indeed, wedding preparations seem to have taken over all of their lives by this point.

Charity's sister Hope's baby Fiona seems not to have taken with her prospective uncle. The feeling was mutual.

Hope didn't make a good impression, either.

It was up to Lucius to arrange a bachelor party. Given that not only Severus's, but also Charity's male relatives were to be invited, *as well as* Severus's co-workers on the teaching staff from Hogwarts, *and* Nicholas Flamel, the planning was a bit fraught. A posh dinner at Summerisle was arranged, with dancing Veela for entertainment

Sirius Black -- who had charmed his way out of St Mungo's by that time -- was NOT invited.

Things did not go as planned. It was embarasing enough that Severus's prospective brother-in-law did not respond well to the Veela, but the whole occasion deteriorated when a large black dog burst into the room causing havoc. Lucius's proposed posh dinner descended into a brawl.

The Snapes did not take an extended honeymoon. Just a long weekend. That was enough time, however, for Harry to discover the concealed runic curse engraved into the threshold of the DADA classroom. It was generally concluded that the runes had been concealed from everyone's sight but Tom Riddle's.

That the scar on Harry's forehead was the last of Tom's Horcruxes was a matter of considerable concern, but with Harry's physical condition improved over the year he'd been under the care of Snape and his potions regimen, and adults who had been watching out for him. Once the term broke up, and over Albus's mild objections, Grand Master Flamel and Professor Snape, with Madam Pomfrey's help, designed a procedure to deal with it.

Unbeknownst to the persons involved, while Harry was undergoing the procedure, in a room beneath the Hospital Wing, nine witches, with a mysterious book, performed a ritual, hedging their bets.

    All of which was successful.

Later that summer, in Massachusetts, a new student at Arkham, by the name of Merlin Gaunt, checks into the best wizarding hotel in town for a short period to familiarize himself with the area before the term commences. A local co-ed of excellent family (the Proctors, you know, although not one of the rich ones) helps him to pass the time with a chat regarding the grand adventure of his mysterious background.

He decides to cultivate the acquaintance for the sake of both her knowledge of local affairs, as well as her family connections.

He also makes a note to himself to never lose his British accent.

I have a horendous tendency to build images which are determined to be scenery instead of illustrations.

I am, however, learning to crop.

Plus, it is just plain easier to do just about *anything* since I stopped trying to work in DS3. The 2011 versions were all DS3 and gen4 (never again!). And there has been a lot of really nice product released since 2011. Even if I have used quite a few of the same sets and props in both versions.

Epilogue: Four years later. Harry comes home to lacewing cottage after a summer visit to his godfather in the Caribbean. He had enjoyed watching his Housemate Cedric Diggory compete in the TriWizard Tournament the previous year. The prophet made much of Cedric, passing Harry off as "yesterday's hero" to which he says; "Thank goodness."
