Looking for movie grip equipment

edited December 2016 in The Commons

Okay so this time I am looking for grip equipment that is used in making movies. Not really professional but more of home made. Will accept professional though.

Could be for use in blocking a scene (I find DAZ 3D excellent for pre-viz (pre visualization)) or maybe for use as part of a scene.

For instance, I made a doorway dolly. Mine is not Ackerman steering but uses two straight and two swivel wheels. I can swap the two straight wheels for swivel wheels making it four wheels that swivel. Sort of my answer to a Leonard Chapman dolly or that of Fisher. My dolly doesn't run on a track but on plywood. I suppose the way they did it in Magnolia (1999) the movie. See in the features on the DVD.

I made a jib crane that mounts onto the dolly. The crane extends 4' but with attachments extends further out to 10' and 16' for the camera. Plus 2' higher with the stand that the jib is mounted onto.

Could also use a boom pole for the sound man.

C-Stands or Century Stands as opposed to the lighting stands I usually see in the store here. It would hold an Arri light for instance. Something along the lines of Matthews C-stand and can attach extended arm for Gobo or to grip a reflector or scrim.

Which brings me to reflector. Could be white clothe or board.

Same for the scrim but black.

Flags? I guess I would adjust the transparency of those.

Apple boxes. Those come in four sizes. I'll post photos with the dimensions below.

Might need matte box and rails (or rods) as well or even counter weight on back of rails with shoulder pad and handles in front.

So has anyone seen these in 3D around on the internet? Any leads as to where I could find them would be really appreciated.

I spent more than a couple years on movie sets in the past,  so when I saw these on sharecg I made a note for future reference.  They'll take care of at least some of your list.  I had considered making a few of these in 3d,   just not sure how much demand there would be.  Appleboxes would be pretty easy,  full, half, quarter,  pancake (eighth) , c stands fairly easy too. I have made a rough mock up of a jib crane, but stopped short of actually rigging it.

Sure enough B&H is selling 'Mini Full' 10" x 12" x 8". My contact was right after all, just unable to express himself. I know the feeling too well.

Thank you Juju. I bought the top one a couple of years ago, Photography Studio by 2nd World. Very nice.

Considered the dormblock but had to pass on it. No reason.

Went instead with another favourite artist Richabri. This one is The Film Studio. It has a mic on a stand.

Keep posting folks even if not exactly what I am looking for, someone might find it useful.

Photos were taken with iPad but don't have attachment for tripod yet so blurry. Should have used Nikon. You get gist though and I wanted to see how iPad camera works. Very hot in apartment again. So will rest a couple of days and put in attachments that make jib longer and hold heavier cameras.

A-clamps hold the metal weights in place. Wood was old to begin with and warped and cracked. The hole in the wood is to screw the lazy Susan in place. Free though and 1" thick. Dolly wood is new and sanded on one side. Originally 4 x 8 feet cut into four boards.

The wood that juts out to the left (I am left handed) is where the Samsung Android would go to view what the Nikon would see. The app I use is DslrDashboard. QdslrDashboard if I use the iPad.

  • Art of Jibbing

    Dolly Grip

One of the cool things about Daz3D is that the 3D camera in the scene, whether on tripod or jib or dolly can be made to give you a simulated image by placing a new camera where that 3d camera is and parenting it.

Four photos added to list of jib. Taken with android and flash. Sloppy I know and will redo all photos better when I am done.

These four photos show the first extention added on. The camera is a Sony CCD-VX3 (Battery etc not attached). The weights are not balanced at 25 lbs.

Next set of photographs will have the 2nd extention and the brace placed where the camera is currently attached. It is 1/16x3/4x6 and slides into the 1/16x1x6. The first part is also 1/16x3/4x6 & 1/16x3/4x4 at the back end.

I guess I will attach a matte box in that one.

  • That jib looks great. And that's an impressive vertical range of motion.  Double arm to keep it level,  and pneumatic tires on the dolly to absorb the shock. All very well thought out.  I'm wondering if you notice much noise off those ballbearings?   All in all a great investment.  Just the money you'll save not having to rent that equipment; well worth it.  Impressive.

That is a very good question. Yes, there is definitly a rdrdrdrd as the jib pans. That is the short answer.

Long answer; Would the mic on board the camera whichever camera is used pick up that sound even if the camera is pointed away from the ballbearings and two or ten feet away? I would be more concerned about the sound of the camera auto focus mechanism or the motor of the zoom on the lens. Even if I weren't using those motors, the camera mic is not sufficient for picking up sound of actors clearly. Picture is picture and sound is sound. Each requires concentration. Which is why I prefer having a separate soundman attend to that.

I use an Edirol CS-50 shotgun mic, balanced connection, Zoom H4 digital recorder or a Fostex MR-8 mkII digital recorder and monitor with with AKG 271 mkII headphones. The microphone is mounted on a boompole or a mic stand placed very close to the talent or even in view with the talent. The sound is clean. I am even able to pick up isolated recordings of just cicadas in the summer or crickets in the evening.

I might put a lavalier mic on actor for a long shot where I don't want the mic in the scene. Probably loop it (re-record) in post.

To sync the sound and picture, I use a clapboard at the beginning of each shot take. The sound that shows up from the camera in the editor is used temporarily to help match up waveforms if needed. Then that sound track is deleted.

A lot of these jib crane shots are recorded as 'B' roll with out sound. Just used in montage such as the opening credits of a TV show like Family.

Does anyone know if the key grip plugin for Daz Studio will be updated for 4.9 or 4.10? I really miss using it.

    What "key grip plugin"?

The Key Grip plugin is for Daz Studio 3 only and is no longer available for sale. It is for controlling the virtual camera with a joystick or keypad. It does not have anything to do with this thread. Sorry.

Would have been cool to control a real camera with the software such as Arduino (complicated Linux program) attached to Daz Studio for motion control.

Personally, I find a lot of the movement in Daz videos on YouTube unnecessary and long and makes me have two meals (one going down and the second coming up) and just not good if it gives me vertigo.

ChrisViral Vlog made a DIY Arduino slider rig but it looks like a world of pain if you ask me. Here is an 11 minute video of that.

See the Maclean Fashion Studio just above our postings. It might even still be on sale.

These lights including the softboxes already have emissives and work nicely in 3Delight. When you move the light, you see its effect right away in the viewport.

One thing I suggest though is that as soon as you load a light, change the parent of the cable to that light before you move anything.

I have a question for you maclean on that set, is Area 2 updated for Iray as well? I see the 3DL version in the content tab, but not Iray. Wondering if it is there, but Studio is being a pest.

Ignore what I wrote, I forgot to check the Props section instead of just the Figure section in the Poser library of Daz Studio. I saw Iray but don't know if it works due to my gpu only having 500mb ram. Sorry I am of no use to help.

  • I forgot to add the Chroma Key Green Screen Studio by First Bastion because it was purchased long ago and didn't show up unless I uncheck hide previously purchased when browsing. Excellent for previz on set.

  • Age of Armour has two cameras that are good for previz. He also has a free download upgrade for that video camera on his webpage. The zip contains a Tripod, Case, Camera Light and a Tapeless, Hard Drive Video Recorder.
