FBX Import

I have created a animated burning candle prop which consists of multiple sub-props: candle wick, candle top, candle body and dripping wax. The candle wick and candle top both have morphs. I imported the sub-props into DAZ Studio and then proceeded to animate them. This all worked well and when I played the timeline, the animation was just as expected.

However, for use in other software packages, I wanted to export the prop (i.e. set of sub-props) along with their animation as an FBX file.

The problem is that when I went to test the FBX file by importing it back into DAZ Studio, the sub-props loaded but the animation was corrupt. Some of the sub-prop animated correctly but others had off translations applied - sometimes for only part of the animation.

When I imported the FBX file into other software packages (such as Blender) the sub-props and animation worked correctly. This leads me to believe that the FBX file is written correctly but DAZ Studio seems to have some issue proeprly importing it.

I tried both exporting the FBX with the sub-props parented to a single prop and exporting with no sub-props parented. Both exports have issues although the issues are somewhat different (i.e. the translation errors are different).

This issue is currently preventing me from making my prop available on Rendreosity because the FBX does not work with DAZ Studio (which is a commonly used software used by Renderosity users).

Any idea what could be causing this import issue?

  • I'm having what sounds like a similar issue.. but with characters exported out via fbx to motionbuilder for animation,  then brought back in, even when having the setting of "merging clothing into skeleton" when exporting.  I don't remember previous versions of daz studio doing this.. I have 4.9.2.70 and it does it also in the latest beta build.  There are also other issues I'm finding with importing fbx files, so perhaps something is broken

  • I just did some exports and re-imports using FBX format for a completely different prop and, once again, had issues. Off things was the issues weren't even consistant. For example, I was adding pivot points for my prop. I would save one, try one and it would re-import fine. So I go on to do all the rest and when I re-import it all the pivots seem reset. Doing the same in other software worked fine. So it seems it is definitly related to DAZ Studio and not the content.
