    Jamahoney - thank you. Great use of Dave's Desert Temple. Yes, CEL stands for Contour Lines Enhanced. Can be done in Bryce; but then, what can't?

    Mermaid - thank you, yes, offshore rig sounds good. Love your Moon image. I understand that the dog is not howling at the moon, probably too amazed at this size.

    Rashad - we can't actually say which method is the best because it depends on the scene, the light and it's angle of incidence. Yet another method is to add some fine bump and keep the refractive index to 0. It is good to know more than one method.

    Good afternoon all;

    Always enjoy the images posted here and many thanks to Horo for his tree setups.

     

    Another example of using a volumetric texture (applied to a large cube) to create a variable density atmospheric effect. Took a lot of fiddeling with the texture offsets to get an “open” space around the dino.   People with a Paleontology bent would note that Utahraptor was not a jungle critter but I claim artistic liscence (LOL). 

     

    Content used:

    Utahraptor ostrommayorum -  DAZ Original.

    Fallen log and vines from Stonemason’s Jungle Construction Kit. Love the little musrooms.

    Bryce Palm trees exposed to Modo for trunk bending.

    Background terrain just a bunch of Bryce stones.

    Illuminated by a Spherical Dome Light (64 Q) and Use Sky IBL.

    Rendered with Normal AA, taking a little over 5 hours (mostly due to leaf alpha transparency).

    Dan Whiteside: What a wonderful paleo-jungle render. I like the atmospheric perspective with the bright front and vague background.

    Dan - great render. Yes, since volumetrics have a bug, you can't have several haze/fog objects if they intersect. For one project, I used a torus instead of spheres.

    Here's another attempt at trees. The left one uses a third way to fake some translucency: bump and refraction 0 at full transparency; the right one Rashad's method. The grass is instanced trees after Slepalex's method. The stones are again trees (5), after a method of David.

    Mermaid - thank you. I'm going to write some PDFs on the subjects because there are several options for different results. I've also spent some time investigating transparency for foliage that is not made from objects but uses 2D faces. In order to be able to share my finding in some coherent manner, I've got to sort out my random notes first.

    I am a bit on a retro trip. I am having fun with Genesis 1 characters and V4 models. Here a model called Addison. This is a regular Bryce render, no premium effects. Light comes from 2 sphere lights with 100 % shadow softness and a spotlight. Minor postwork with Photoshop. Increased only the brightness a bit. You can find the picture in my gallery.

    Very good render, Electro-Elvis. Hair came also out well. It appears that the lady's right hand is floating, I miss a shadow.

    Thank you Horo. No, the lady is not floating, but you are right it looks like. Maybe I have not choosen the detail carefully enough. Actually she is standing on her left leg and is bowing her right leg. But the summer dress and Mesh smoothing made a mess below her right knee and her dress looks there rather strange. :-)

    Dan- Extremely well done looking image. Those trees dont even look like Bryce trees at first. Couldn't ask for more. The trick with the atmosphere is brilliant! Full marks as usual.

    Horo- So much to talk about. First, great image. Second, I was unaware that David had come up with a way to use trees to make stones. I can imagine it just requires really thick yet very short lengthed trunks? Fascinating ideal. In this case I do find myself preferring slightly the tree to the right. However we already know the limits of my method, I'm much more interested in your studies on preserving translucent properties while working with 2d images of leaves. I will consune your pdf with biscuits!

    Elvis- She looks great to me. The skin tone is very pleasing. The pose, often overlooked, seems to give the image more interest than it might otherwise provide. The fabric on the dress looks natural as well. Great job!

    Elvis: Wonderful image. But, indeed it looks like she is sitting and leaning on something. That is why her hand looks to be floating instead of resting. But the model and dress and lights and hair look great!

    Rashad - thank you. The trees above use different types of translucency for the leaves and the results made me go into this subject more deeply. Interesting subject, I discovered that Blend Transparency changes how the optics work in the Mat Lab, though the preview doesn't properly show it. Rendering tells you that also some options in the Premium rendering mode change. As for the tree stones, I discovered it by chance in a scene render by David in our Beneath the Waves set, I don't remember we've ever discussed the option. But there's more than just copying David's preset. So I'm still busy.

    Here's a relatively simple double stacked terrain render using a fisheye lens (EWL) with the equivalent focal length of 16.1 mm in front of the camera (like the one I use with my FX DSLR), FOV 85 degrees at Scale 100%. Without the fisheye (not shown), the Bryce camera would need a 7.5 mm rectilinear lens giving the shown horizontal angle of view of about 135 degrees but much distorted towards the edges (FOV 167 degrees, Scale 100%).

    I'm still working on the tree PDFs but couldn't help to do something less stony just to see what else can be done using only the wood.

    Horo – lovely abstract. I also did an abstract using one of your Object files from the http://www.daz3d.com/bryce-7-1-pro-environments-beneath-the-waves set and replaced the Wings 3D object with the tree_rocks object.

    I've finished the three tree PDFs I've been working on and have them published on my website (Bryce & 3D CG Documents > Mine > Material > Tree Foliage | Objects > Grass Patch made from a Bryce Tree; Cairns made from a Bryce Tree).

    I couldn't resist to make some more weird trees based on the stone idea.

    Super works, Mermaid and Horo: at one point, and please don't see this as criticism, I thought I was looking at magic mushrooms (hic, hey mann devil), and another of human organs (polyps surprise) - all disaccociated to what you had intended, of course.

    Finally I have installed again Esha's Instance Daisies on my computer. To try it out I made this picture. Light comes from the Bryce sun only. Rendered with Premium Effects, TA with 64 rpp. The old shack is modeled by DryJack and can be found at Renderosity.com for free.
