Thank you DigiVault!
Just to verify, I redownloaded the rayay export preset and it's dated Dec 31, 2016. Is that the newest version?
I believe so. If you open a Substance file go to File/Export Textures/Configuration/RayRay and hover your cursor over the $textureSet_Normal you should see it say "Normal OpenGL (RGB)". If it says that then you have the latest update.
You only need 5 0f 5......it's only 2.14k
Pete
Okay, but where do you put the exporter file?
C:\Users\Pete\Documents\Substance Painter 2\shelf\export-presets
This is were I put mine.... .\Pete\ will obviously be differant for you
This point is brought up in the videos but the location on Windows would be here: C:\Users\*username*\Documents\Substance Painter\shelf\export-presets
A questions about displays in SP is there a way to make the model look smoother, I get this horrible faceting.
Is there some sort of setting that can bump up the smoothing. It doesn't effect the final render in DS all the maps are fine.
But it hard to make a comparison between with it looks like in SP to DS.
If that is a base resolution mesh with a low poly count, probably not. If it's high resolution, maybe, but I'm not sure what would need changed in the application settings off-hand.
I found out what it was, it was just I forgot to turn on smoothing when I Sud divided the Arm armor. Dup !!!
Does Substance Designer MDL stuff work in Daz? I seem to recall something about it... not working so well.
You know I have seem the MDL stuff in there, but after looking at how many nodes you would have to connect up to it forget it !!!
I started following a youtube tutorial on creating an Iray MDL in Substance Designer and saw how complex it was....egads. I decided to wait until I had a full pot of coffee and a few hours.to spare.
Yeah, Iray MDL lives up to 'spaghetti code' very literally.
I just don't know if it's worth poking at Substance Designer for me unless it's Daz compatible.
(Theoretically it should be, but practically...)
Then how do people make materials and/or shaders? I'd love to learn this but there's some confusion as to which package to invest time in.
I don't know if people use Substance Designer for other renderers or what.
For Daz Studio, I presume a lot of people just use Shader Mixer. I have. It isn't ... pretty, but it's doable.
I think you could use Substance Designer to make additional materials for use in Substance Painter. So it still could end up being useful in Daz.
You can also export maps from Substance Designer, though you lose the ability to tweak. A Substance plug-in fro DS would be nice.
I would potentially have use of designer and painter to create a static/baked texture for a new model.
Though I can do something similar with Carrara, which I already own.
So it comes down to how much better it'd be vs price
In regards to some of the comments about MDL, you do realize that you can export common maps (diffuse, spec, bump, roughness, etc) from Substance Painter and use these inside of Daz for iRay...right? That's what this whole tutorial is about...maybe I'm misunderstanding.
@Midnight - I even get that faceting with smoothing On. I always export in FBX and OBJ. I've found FBX to display a better model but recently I had faceting in FBX but uploaded OBJ and it looked smooth...so not sure what is happening there.
Sure, I was just curious also how well designer could work with Daz, with custom shaders
Ahhhh so sorry, wasn't aware that you were talking about Designer.
No worries, Painter _is_ the main topic and there are a lot of folks talking.
By the way, picked up the tutorial today - nice job!
Just a question do Alphas have to be square or not? when I import a rectangular one, it tends to squash into the circle.
I believe they do need to be square
I've always created square alphas in Photoshop, once there you can make a rectangular shape inside of the square alpha and use that.
@Tabasco - Thanks!
Yes your right as soon as I made it square it came out right !
Thanks
Here's a comparison of Daz Iray and SP2 Iray, not as close as I wanted but still very pleased with the result.
I match the SP2 Iray environment with DS as best I could but must be missing something, using the same HDR map.
